성 패트릭은 누구인가?
성 패트릭은 실존했던 인물로, 약 385년에 태어나서,
본명은 매윈 수카트로, 후에 주교가 되면서 패트릭으로 변경했다.
아일랜드 출신이라고 믿는 사람이 많지만, 확실치 않으며,
오히려 잉글랜드, 웨일즈나 스코틀랜드에서 출생해서
그가 틴에이저일 때에 해적들에 의해서 아일랜드로 납치가 되어서
목동으로 강제 사역을 하면서 노예로 지내다가
6년 후 가까스로 도망을 쳐서 고향으로 돌아왔다고 추정을 하고 있다.
그 후 신부가 된 다음에 5세기 중반에 선교사로 다시 아일랜드로
돌아가서, 30년 동안 아일랜드 곳곳에 다수의 학교, 교회, 수도원을
설립해서 전교와 교육에 주력을 했다.
그는 아일랜드의 첫 주교였던 성 팔라디우스에 이어서
아일랜드의 두 번째 주교로 임명을 받아서 주교로 봉직하다가
461년 3월 17일에 세상을 떠났다고 추정되고 있다.
성 페트릭은 아일랜드의 수호성인이자, 1961년부터는 나이지리아,
그리고 카리브해에 있는 작은 섬 몬세랏의 수호성인이기도 하다.
아울러 미국 내에서도 특히 아일랜드 출신이 많이 사는 보스턴 도시,
