올해 1월 19일은 에드가 앨런 포우가 태어난지 200주년이 되는 날이다.

그는 시인이자, 단편소설가이기도 했고, 편집인으로도 활약을 했다.

또한 그는 추리소설과 공포소설의 선구자이기도 했고,

현대 단편소설의 기초를 닦기도 했다.

그리고 글의 스타일과 형식의 영향에 관해서 중점을 둔

이름난 평론가이기도 했다.

 

그가 쓴 여러 작품중에 대표적인 시와 소설은 나열해 보면...

어렸을때 부터 추리소설이나 미스테리 소설을 좋아해서 국민학교때에 한글로

The Black Cat와 The Fall of the HOuse of Usher를

이미 읽었는데 나중에 중고등학교를 다니면서 다시 영어로 가슴 졸이면서

읽었던 기억이 아직도 생생하다.

그의 탄생 200주년을 기념하는 차원에서

오랜만에 위에 나열된 소설과 시 중에 몇개는 다시 읽어보고 싶어진다.

이나이가 되어서 읽어도 가슴 졸이면서 흥미진진하게 읽을까....

세월이 지나도 닳지않은 순수함이 얼마만이라도 남아 있을려나....

 

잘 알려진 The  Raven(까마귀) 시는 좀 음침해서

이왕이면 내이름과 같은

역사상의 클레오파트라와 미모로 쌍벽을 이루는

트로이의 헬렌이라는 시를

오늘밤만이라도 빼어난 미모로 세계를 들썩거렸던 그녀가 되어서

천천히 rhyme에 맞게

미모에 걸맞는 목소리로 (whatever that means..ㅎㅎㅎ)

소리내어 읽어보았다.

 

오늘밤 꿈에 오디세이와 일리아드에서 등장하는

멋진 남정네들이

나타날지도 모르겠다.

이 시집은 엘리자베스 배레트에게 헌정되었다.

 이 신문은 1909년 1월 10일에 발행된 뉴욕타임즈에 그의 탄생 100주년을

기념하면서 쓴 기사이다.  기사에 볼티모어에 있는 그의 묘지의 모습과

1848년에 친구에게 보낸 편지도 소개되었다.
