반 윌리엄즈 탄생 150주년 합창공연 2부: 도나 노비스 파쳄/Dona Nobis Pacem by Ralph Vaughan Williams

 

감동적인 공연이 끝나고

지휘자인 라츨라프 박사가 합창단을 소개하자,

일제히 청중들이 일어나서 연주자들에게 기립 박수로  환호하고 있다.

오케스트라 단원들에게도 삼 차에 걸쳐서 기립박수를...

 

 

이 공연의 소프라노 솔로인 졸린 컬리와

바리톤 솔로인 브라이스 로데릭 씨가 환호를 보내는 청중들에게 인사를 하고 있다.

이 칸타타의 가사는  

미국 남북전쟁의 참혹함과 슬픔을 표현한 월트 휘트먼의 감동적인 전쟁 시와

죽음에 관해서 쓰인 존 브라이트의 시,

그리고 다양한 성경 구절을 작곡가 반 윌리엄즈가 직접 발췌해서

칸타타의 멜로디를 붙였다.

 

 

 

 

 

 

DONA NOBIS PACEM/주여 평화를 주소서 

A Cantata for Soprano and Baritone Soli, Chorus and Orchestra

소프라노, 바리톤 솔로, 합창단과 오케스트라를 위한 칸타타

I. Agnus Dei/주님의 어린양 

Agnus Dei qui tollis peccata mundi 

( Lamb of God who takest away the sins of the world,
Dona nobis pacem (Grant us peace)

칸타타의 처음과 끝은 전쟁이 없는 평화와 간구하는

(1부와 6부) 라틴어 가사 '도나 노비스 파쳄' 악장이다.

 

II. Beat! beat! drums!/북을 울려라! 

Beat! beat! drums! – Blow! bugles! blow!
Through the windows – through the doors burst like a ruthless force,
Into the solemn church, and scatter the congregation;
Into the school where the scholar is studying;
Leave not the bridegroom quiet – 

no happiness must he have now with his bride;
Nor the peaceful farmer any peace, ploughing his field, 

or gathering in his grain;
So fierce you whirr and pound you drums –

2부 '북을 울려라!'는 급박한 전시 상황에

군인들의 사기를 돋우는 북과 트럼펫이 울려 퍼지는 가운데

다수의 전사자들은 관이 도착하길 기다리는 상황을 그린 악장으로

전쟁터의 급박하기도 하고 슬픈 분위기를 잘 표현하고 있다.

 

III Reconciliation/화해 

Word over all, beautiful as the sky,
Beautiful that war and all its deeds of carnage must in time be utterly
lost, That the hands of the sisters Death and Night incessantly, softly,
wash again and ever again this soiled world;
For my enemy is dead, a man divine as myself is dead,

전투가 끝나고 조용하고 아름다운 밤에 전사한 

수많은 아군과 적군들의 죽음의 허망함을 묘사하고 있다.

IV Dirge for Two Veterans/두 퇴역 군인들을 위한 애도가  

The last sunbeam
Lightly falls from the finished Sabbath,
On the pavement here, and there beyond it is looking
Down a new-made double grave.
Lo, the moon ascending,
Up from the east the silvery round moon,
Beautiful over the house-tops, ghastly, phantom moon,

한 전투에서  같은 시간에 함께 전사한 아버지와 아들의

죽음을 애도하고 있다.

코로나로 1년 반 동안 공연이 중단되었다가,

비록 마스크를 쓰고 노래를 불러야 했지만,

너무도 다행스럽게 작년 12월 초에 헨델의 메시아 공연,

올해 4월에 베토벤 탄생 250주년 공연,

6월엔 우크라이너의 평화와 난민들을 위한 공연을 무대에 올렸다.

 

2022-23년 시즌 첫 공연인 반 윌리엄즈 공연은

코로나 전처럼 다시 마스크 없이 자유롭게 목소리를 높여서

청중들에게 평화를 염원하는 가사를 제대로 전달하면서

노래를 부를 수 있어서 어느 때보다 감동적인 무대였다.

 

이 공연의 감동을 바로 뒤로 하고

3주 후에 작년과 달리 전곡을 무대에 올려질 헨델의 메시아 공연을 위해서

새로운  마음가짐으로 오늘 합창 연습에 임했다.
