[아름다운 겨울 영시42]Not Only the Eskimos by Lisel Mueller

10월 중순에 미국으로 여행을 다녀 간 사이에 벌써 눈이 서너번 내렸지만

오늘 새벽부터 처음으로 본격적인 눈이 내려서 저녁이 되자

25 cm의 눈이 수북히 쌓여서 온천지가 하얀 설국으로 변했다.

 

거실의 커다란 창 뒤로 탐스런 눈송이가 휘날리는 모습을 지켜 보면

늘 리즐 뮬러의 시 Not only the Eskimos라는 아름다운 영시가 입가에 맴돌아서

울 동네와 로키의 눈경치가 담긴 사진과 함께 감상 해 본다.

영하 27도 날씨에 얼어붙은 호수 위에 쌓인 아무도 밟아 보지 않은 눈길을 걸어서....

 

 

the grainy snow of the Puritans
and snow of soft, fat flakes,

.

 

 

2012년 11월 7일에 새벽부터 내린 눈은 오후 내내 그칠 줄 모른다.

 

 

 

guerrilla snow, which comes in the night
and changes the world by morning,

참고로 에스키모인들의 언어에는 한글이나 영어처럼

눈이라는 한가지의 명사에 여러가지 형용사를 동반하지 않고도

여러가지 형태의 눈을 일일이 표현하는

눈 이라는 명사들만 자그만치 20개에 가깝다네요.

 

 

 

 

우리 인간들은 제각기

생김새도 다르고,

성격과 취향도 다르고,

주어진 탈렌트도 다르고,

사는는 모습 또한 천차만별이듯이

그저 겉으로 보기엔 다 그눈이 그 눈같은 눈마저

조물주는 때와 장소 그리고 상황에 따라서

이렇듯 다양한 모습으로 창조 해 내신 하얀 눈이 경이롭기만 합니다.

 

 

리즐 뮬러 시인은 그녀의

예리한 시적인 눈과 마음으로 맛깔스럽게 그 눈을

세밀히 묘사한 이 시가

겨울 내내 닥터 지바고의 영화의 배경처럼

하얀 설국 속에서 살고 있는 내게는

각별히 가슴에 와 닿습니다.

 

천천히 한 구절씩 음미해서 읽다 보면

이 시의 끝 부분처럼 많은 종류의 눈 중에서

천진난만하고 순수했던 어린 시절을 연상하는

동심의 눈처럼 되고 싶다는 희망을 잃지 않으면서

아직 아무도 밟아보지 않은 순백의 하얗고 깨끗한 맘으로

이 추운 겨울을 훈훈하게 보내고 싶습니다.
