바하의 B단조 미사곡 공연 - B Minor MASS by J. S. Bach

B 단조 미사곡 - Mass in B Minor by J. S. Bach

 

요한 세바스찬 바하 작곡의 B 단조 미사곡은

바하의 생애 말년에 돤성이 된 작품으로 바하의 진수를 잘 보여주는 합창곡이다.

당시의 북부 독일의 대부분 사람들이 그러했듯이, 독실한 루터교 신자이며,

라이크찌히의 성 토마스 교회의 음악과 오르간을 관장하는 바하가

무슨 이유로 주로 캐톨릭교회에서 사용하는 라틴어 기도문을 바탕으로 이 미사곡을 작곡했는지

의아해 하는 사람들도 있다.

(정확히 말을 하자면, 기도문의 내용이 일부 수정이 되었고,

고도의 난이도의 음악을 8부에 달하는 큰 합창단과 큰 오케스트라와 필요한 이 곡은

캐톨릭 성당에서도 공연하기에 적합하지 않기는 마찬가지다.)

 

하지만 바하가 이곡을 완성하기 오래 전부터, 그가 일하는 교회음악으로 작곡된 파트를

모아서 이 대작을 작곡한 큰 이유 중 하나는 비록 다른 세팅과 목적으로 사용된 곡들을 모아서

그의 탁원한 음악적 재능을 발휘해서 그가 믿는 하는님에게 음악적 찬미와 영광을 드리려는 의도가 보인다.

B 단조 미사곡은 바하의 종교합창곡의 최고 걸작품만이 아니라,

인간의 목소리로 표현 할 수 있는 가능성을 최대한으로 보여준

바로크 음악의 진수를 보여주는 작품이다.

 

미사곡의 도임부인 키리에(Kyrie) 와 대영광송(Gloria)는

바하가 1733년에 당시 새로 뽑힌 색소니 (Saxony) 지역의 우두머리에게 보내졌는데,

이런 성가곡은 루터교의 예배중에서 평상적으로 자주 공연되는 예배전례 음악이기도 했다.

 

거룩하시다(Santus)곡은 1724년 성탄절 예배를 위해서 이미 작곡이 된 곡과

캐톨릭 미사 전례 음악 세팅에 맞추어서 과거에 작곡된 다수의 칸타타 곡을 수정해서

합창파트와 솔로 파트를 추가해서 아름답고 장엄한 santus 를 완성했다.

 

이 미사곡은 1747년에서 1749년에 걸쳐서 작곡이 되었다고 추정하며,

불행하게도, 완성된 전곡을 바하의 생전에 공연이 되지 않아서

정작 이 곡을 작곡한 바하는 완성된 전곡을 감상하지 못한 채 세상을 떠났다.

거기다가, 바하가 세상을 떠난 뒤에 바하의 음악을 비롯해서 바로크 음악은

서서히 사람들의 기억에서 사라져서, 한동안 아무도 이 걸작품을 듣을 수 없었다.

 

많은 바로크 합창음악의 팬들에겐 무척이나 다행스럽게도

키른버거(Kirnberger), 이마뉴엘 바하(Emanuel Bach)을 비롯해서 다수의 음악가들과,

특히 바하의 음악의 진수를 다시 세상에 널리 재소개를 한 멘델스존의 덕분으로

그의 작품들이 지금까지 보존되어서, 전세계에서 널리 공연되고 사랑을 받게 되었다.

합창음악 장르의 최고봉인 이 미사곡은 베를린에 위치한 베를리너 싱아카데미(Berliner Singakademie)에서

젤터(C F Zelter)의 지휘로 1835년에 초연이 되었다.

 

 

 

 

 

3월 6일에 알버타 알버타 바로크 앙상블 오케스트라와 함께

윈스피어 뮤직센터 공연 무대에서 연습 중에 잠시...

 

 

 

 

 

 

내가 소프라노로 과거 20년간 활동해 온 리차드 이든 싱거즈 합창단은 1951년에 창단된 후로

이 미사곡을 다섯번 공연을 한바 있다. 

다른 미사곡 작품이나 합창곡보다 파트별로 고도의 테크닉과 뮤지션쉽이 요구되고

4부가 아니라 8부로 나뉘어져서  대곡을 소화할 만한 합창단도 드물어서

이곡은 무대에 올려지는 횟수가 따라서 많지 않은 않은 작품을 무대에 올리기 위해서 

지난 크리스마스에 헨델의 메시야를 마치자 마자 연습에 들어가서

9주간의 강도높은 연습을 거친 후에 공연을 하게 되어서 남다른 애착이 가는 작품이다.

 

RES 합창단은 2001년에 에드몬튼 심포니 오케스트라와 함께 이 곡을

공연한지 13년 만에 바로크 곡의 스페샬리스트인 4명의 독창자와

알버타 바로크 앙상블과 함께 이 걸작품을 3월 9일 일요일 저녁에

윈스피어 뮤직센터 공연 홀에서 감동적인 공연을 무대에 올렸다.

 

개인적으로는 이번이 4번째로 이 미사곡을 공연했는데,

어려운 파트를 매주 연습하면서, 비록 소프라노 파트가 기교적으로 어려울 뿐 아니라

8부 파트와 오케스트라와 함께 아름다운 앙상블을 이루는데 난이도가 높은 이곡을

열심히 연습한만큼 아름답고 감동적인 음악을 1100명의 관객들에게 선사 할 수 있어서

그동안 일을 병행하면서, 끼니도 제대로 못 챙겨먹으면서

열심히 연습한 보람과 기쁨을 제대로 체험 할 수 있는 감동적인 공연이었다.

 

 

 

 

 

 

이 미사곡은 보통 5부로 된 다른 미사곡과 달리 4부로 이루어졌다.

1부는 Missa(미사 키리에와 글로리아), 2부는 Symoblum Nicenum (니케아공회에서 결정된 사도신경 Credo)

3부는 오산나와 베네딕투스( Osanna, Benedictus),

4부는 신의 어린양과 평화를 주소서 (Agnus Dei, Dona Nobis Pacem) 형식으로 작곡이 되었다.
