죽음의 계곡(Death Valley)에도 기적같은 봄이 찾아 들고... (봄 영시 Today 도)

"죽음의 계곡"(Death Valley) 은 북미에서 가장 건조한 사막이라서

풀 한포기도 찾아 보기 힘든 곳이기도 하다.

그런데 올해 2월 말부터 "superbloom" 이라고 불리울 만큼

수백만 송이의 야생화들이 피어나서 기적처럼 봄꽃의 장관을 이루고 있다.

마지막으로 이렇게 봄꽃이 만발했던 때는 2005년으로

11년만에 캘리포니아 주의 남부부터 시작해서 점점 북상하면서

야생화들이 다투어 피어나고 있다.

2016년의 수퍼 야생화 향연은 작년부터 발생한 엘 니뇨(El Niño) 영향으로

평소에 건조한 캘리포니아에 10월 동안 자주 내린 폭우로

죽음의 계곡 일년 평균 강수량이 불과 5cm에서

10배에 가까운 강수량 때문에 모래언덕이나 바위, 자갈, 소금평지의 대지에서

노랗고, 핑크빛, 보라빛나는 화사한 야생화 카페트로 덮여서 장관을 이루고 있다.

데쓰 밸리는 또한 살인적인 더위로 유명하기도 한데,

기록에 따르면 1913년에 최고 섭씨 56.7도(134 F)의 기록을 가지고 있어서

열기가 너무도 뜨거워서, 일년 중 5개월간은 주위 지형은 자체로 발광하는 듯 반짝거리고,

접근 금지령이 내리는 곳이기도 하다.

국도에 만발한 야생화

또한 죽음의 계곡은 북미에서 제일 낮은 위치해 있기도 하고,

살인적인 더위와 더불어 산 정상에 눈이 덮인 산들도 있을 정도로

다양한 환경적인 요소 덕분에

1,000 여종의 생물이 서식하는 지역이기도 하다.

미국 국립공원 관계자들은 이 야생화의 향연 덕분에

관광객들이 대거 몰려 올 것이 예상하고 있으며,

 국립공원 내의 야생화를 꺾는 행위는

불법일 뿐 아니라 생태계를 파괴할 수 있기에

자제해 달라고  방문자들에게강력하게 당부를 했다.

"죽음의 계곡"처럼 환경이 척박하고 황폐해서

지역 이름처럼 생물이 발 붙이고 살기 힘든 죽음의 대지에서도

넉넉하게 내린 비 하나 때문에

이렇게 죽음에서 부활한 대단한 야생화의 장관 덕분에

인생의 봄도 존재할 것 같은 희망이 솟아나고,

3월 말에 돌아오는 부활절의 기적을 미리 체험해 본 듯하다.

제가 좋아하는 봄 영시 빌리 콜린스 작의 "오늘같은 날은" 다시 한번 감상해 봅니다.
