헨델의 메시아 1부 (Handel's Messiah) 공연

 

작년 12월에 Edmonton Symphony Orchestra 와 함께 협연한 메시아 공연에서...

 

올해도 예년처럼 12월 3일과 4일에

헨델의 걸작품인 오라토리오 메시아를

내가 활동중인 리처드 이튼 싱어즈와 에드몬톤 심포니의 협연으로

무대에 올려져서 일주일 내내 연습과 공연으로 바쁜 한 주입니다.

 

개인적으로 지난 35년간 거의 매년 공연을 해서 60회가 넘는 공연무대이지만

여전히 예수님의 생애를 극적으로나 음악적으로

또한 신앙적으로 감동을 안겨다 주는 이 명곡의 매력에 빠져들게 합니다.

 

오라토리오 메시아는 죠지 프레데릭 헨델이 1741년 여름에 24일 만에 영국 런던에서 작곡했으며 가사는 Charles Jennen 이 제임스 왕 성경(King James Bible)에서 인용해서 지어졌다.  1742년 4월 13일에 아일랜드의 더블린에서 수난 기간 중에 교회가 아닌 일반 극장에서 초연이 되었다.     오라토리오는 오페라와 비슷하다고 볼 수 있는데, 오페라처럼 주로 오케스트라, 합창단과 독창자들이 극중 인물로 등장해서 스토리 내용을 청중들에게 전달하는 점이 비슷하나 오페라는 극의 배경이 설치된 무대에서 극중 인물로 분장을 하고 무대 의상을 입고 연기와 함께 노래 가사로 줄거리를 엮어가는데에 비해서 오라토리오는 무대에서 연주되는 노래 가사로만 스토리가 소개되는 점이 다르다고 하겠다.   메시아는 구원자를 뜻하며 또 히브리어로 기름 부음을 받은 자 (영어로는 Annointed) 라는 뜻도 가지고 있으며 많은 크리스찬들에게는 구원자인 메시아가 곧 예수 그리스도인 셈이다.   이곡은 예수의 생애와 고난, 그리고 영광스러운 부활을 그린 곡으로 예수의 생애에 따라서 3부로 구성되어 있다. 제 1부는 예수님의 탄생에 관한 이야기를 예수님의 탄생을 예언하고 있는 구약의 이사야 예언서와 그 예연에 따라서 탄생한 아기 예수님을 묘사한 신약의 마태복음을 바탕이 되고, 제 2부는 예수님의 수난과 부활, 승천 그리고 그리스도의 복음으로 이루어져 있다. 제 3부는 요한 묵시록에 있는 내용을 바탕으로 되어 있다. 따라서 1부는 성탄절 전에 많이 연주되고 2부와 3부는 부활절에 많이 공연된다.

PART (1부, 예수님의 탄생)

Overture(서곡)

RECITATIVE. (Accompanied - Tenor)  (내 백성을 위로하라, 이사야 40:1-3)

Comfort ye, comfort ye My people, saith your God;

speak ye comfortably to Jerusalem;

and cry unto her,

that her warfare is accomplished,

that her iniquity is pardoned.

The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness:

Prepare ye the way of the Lord:

make straight in the desert a highway for our God.   

 

AIR (Tenor) (모든 골짜기가 기뻐하리라, 이사야 40:4)
Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill made low,

the crooked straight and the rough places plain.

 

 

CHORUS  (주의 영광이 드러나리라, 이사야 40:5) 

And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed,

and all flesh shall see it together;

for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.

Thus saith the Lord of Hosts:-Yet once a little while

and I will shake the heavens and the earth,

the sea and the dry land; and
I will shake all nations; and the desire of all nations shall come.

The Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to His temple, even the messenger of the covenant,

whom ye delight in: behold, He shall come, saith the Lord of Hosts.

 But who may abide the day of His coming?

and who shall stand when He
appeareth? For He is like a refiner's fire.

Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a Son,

and shall call his name Emmanuel, God with us.

O thou that tellest good tidings to Zion, get thee up into the high mountain:

O thou that tellest good tidings to Jerusalem, lift up thy voice with strength;

lift it up, be not afraid; say unto the cities of Judah, Behold you God! Arise, shine,

for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee.

 

 

 

RECITATIVE. (Accompanied - Bass)  (보라, 어둠이 온 땅에 덮으리라, 이사야 40:2-3)
For Behold, darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people;

but the Lord shall rise upon thee, and His glory
shall be seen upon thee, and the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to
the brightness of thy rising.

 

 

 AIR (Bass)( 어둠 속을 걷는 사람들에게 밝은 빛이, 이사야 9:1)  

The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light; and they
that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined.

 

 

CHORUS (우리를 위해서 한 아기가 태어나리라, 이사야 9:6)
For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given,

and the government shall be upon His shoulder;

and His name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor,

The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

There were shepherds abiding in the field,

keeping watch over their flock by night.

RECITATIVE. (Accompanied - Soprano) (보라, 주의 천사가 그들에게 나타나서 주의 영광을, 루가 2:9)

And lo! the angel of the Lord cam upon them,

and the glory of the Lord shone round about them,

and they were sore afraid.

 

 

RECITATIVE. (Soprano) (천사가 말하기를 두려워 말라 나는 좋은 소식과 기쁨을 전하려고 왔다, 루가 2:10-12)
And the angel said unto them, Fear not;

for behold I bring you good tidings of great joy,

which shall be to all people;

for unto you is born this day in the City of David,

a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

 

RECITATIVE. (Accompanied - Soprano) (갑자기 천사와 만군이 주님을 찬양하며,  루가 2:13)

And suddenly there was with the angel

a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying:-

Glory to God in the highest, and peace on earth, goodwill towards men.

Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion Shout,

O daughter of Jerusalem! behold,

thy King cometh unto thee! He is the righteous Saviour,

and He shall speak peace unto the heathen.

 

 

RECITATIVE. (Alto) (장님이 눈을 뜨고, 귀머거러기는 들을 것이며   이사야 35: 5-6)
Then shall the eyes of the blind be opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped;

then shall the lame man leap as a hart, and the tongue of the dumb shall sing.

 

 

 

Air (Alto and Soprano)

He shall feed His flock like a shepherd:

and He shall gather the lambs with His arm,

and carry them in His bosom,

and gently lead those that are with young.

 

 

AIR (Soprano) (무거운 짐을 진 자들아, 주께로 나오라...  마태오 11: 28-29)
Come unto Him, all ye that labour and are heavy laden,

and He will give you rest.

Take His yoke upon you, and learn of Him,

for He is meek and lowly of heart,

and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

 

 

CHORUS (주의 멍에는 가볍도다,  마태오 11: 30)
