지구의 위성인 달은 타원궤도로 지구 주위를 주기적으로 돌기에, 지구와의 거리가 시간에 따라서 다르다.
달과 지구와의 거리가 제일 가까운 지점에 와 있을 때를 PERIGREE 라고 불리우며
달과 지구가 Perigree 상황에서 보름달 시기가 겹치는 주기는 411.7 일 주기로 돌아 오는데
작년 3월에 이어서 올해도 지난 주 토요일인 5월 6일에 이런 날을 맞이했다.
이런 날에 뜨는 보름달을 수퍼 문(supermoon) 이라고 흔히 부르며
달과 지구와의 거리는 56,955 km 떨어져서,
평소보다 달이 14% 더 커 보이고, 20% 더 밝게 보인다.
참고로 5월 19일이면 달은 지구와 거리가 가장 멀리 떨어진 거리 (apogee) 인
406,448 km 로 멀어져 간다.

지구의 유일한 위성인 달은 달랑 하나이지만
세계 각지의 다양한 곳에서 다양하고 아름답게 떠 오르는 보름달을 보면서
다양하게 살아 가는 우리 인간의 모습을 보는 듯하다.
집 뒷쪽에 있는 발코니에서 지평선 위로 떠 오르는 보름달을 보면
저절로 두손을 모으고 소원 한가지를 빌어 보곤 하는데
주말에 더 밝고 큰 보름달을 바라다 보면서
이참에 감히 좀 더 큼직한(?) 소원을 빌어 보았다.
