New Afghan police recruits are shown at the German police training centre in Kunduz, Afghanistan.

All are illiterate; they are farmer sons from rural areas who never had any education

and are joining the police for economic reasons. Their loyalty to the government is thin.

A police officer earns around $170 per month, and due to harsh living and working conditions

and the high risk of being killed by the Taliban,

many decide to leave the police force before their contract ends.

경찰이 되고자 지원한 모든이들은 가난한 시골 농부의 자식들로

교육을 전혀 받지 않아서 글을 읽지 못하지만

가난을 벗어나기 위해서 $170의 월급때문에 지원을 한다.

하지만 정부에 대한 신뢰도는 아주 낮고,

열악한 주거 환경과 탈리반에 의해서 사살될 높은 위험율로

다수의 지원자들은 계약이 만료되기 전에 경찰직에서 떠난다.

러시아의 노바야 제믈야 지방에 위치한 바다와 인접한 절벽에서

한 숫백곰이 바다로 추락할 위험을 무릅쓰고 바다새들이 낳은 알을 먹으려고 시도를 하고 있다.

백곰은 지구 온난화로 바다가 얼어 붙지 않아서 그들의 평소 먹이인

바다 물개를 잡아 먹지 못해서 먹이를 구하기 위해서 이렇게 생소한 내륙까지 들어 오고 있다.

who used a chainsaw to remove her horns and a large section of bone in that area of her skull.

The female rhino survived the dehorning and has joined up with a male bull who now accompanies her.

Rhino horn is now worth more than gold on the international market.

South Africa alone has lost more than 400 rhinos to illegal poaching incidents in 2011.

The demand for rhino horn is fueled by a wealthy Asian middle- and upper-class

and is used overwhelmingly as medication.

2011년 남아공화국의 나탈지방에 위치한 투젤라 사립 동물 보호구역에서

4개월 전에 멸종위기에 놓인 코뿔소를 불법으로 잔인하게

전기톱으로 뿔과 뿔 주위의 머리뼈를 잘라 내는

큰 부상을 입고도 살아 남은 왼쪽에 있는 암 코뿔소 옆에

수 코뿔소가 경호하듯이 서 있다.

오래 전부터 한약재나 정력제로 인기가 높은 코뿔소의 뿔은

계속 증가하는 부유한 중상층의 동양인들로 인해서

급증한 수요로 근래에 들어서는 금값보다도 더 비싸게 팔리고 있다.

2011년 한해동안 남아공에서만도 400마리가 넘은 코뿔소들이

불법으로 살생되기도 했다.

Marcos, 89, leads Monica, 87 from their room to the living room.

Although at times he grumbles about the time devoted to her care, Marcos did not see any other possibility.

“Tell me where she is going to be better than here. I treat her like a princess, here she has everything.”

They have been married and living in their apartment in Buenos Aires, Argentina, for 65 years.

In 2007, Monica was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.

Since that moment, her husband devoted all his time to take care of her.

89세의 마르코스와 97세의 모니카는 결혼한지 65년이 된 노부부로

아르젠티나의 부에노스 아이레스에 살고 있다.

아내인 모니카가 2007년에 치매 진단을 받은 후로

남편인 마르코스는 병이 든 그녀의 손발이 되어서 정성껏 보살펴 주고 있다.

"집보다 더 지내기 좋은 곳은 없지요. 내가 그녀를 공주처럼 아껴주고

그녀가 필요한 것들이 다 여기 있으니까요." 마르코스씨의 한 말이다.

Nearly half of all women in Yemen were married as children.

Child marriage is outlawed in many countries and international agreements forbid the practice,

예멘의 하자하자에서 사는 타히니(핑크 드레스)는 그녀가 6살때 당시 25세였던 마제드와 결혼을 했다.

그녀의 예전 학교 친구였던 가다(초록 드레스) 역시도 어린이 신부로

2011년 6월에 그들이 살고 있는 산간동네에서 그녀의 남편과 함께 이 사진을 찍었다.

어린 나이에 결혼이 법으로 금했음에도 불구하고,

예멘에서는 거의 반수의 여성들이 이처럼 아주 어린 나이에 결혼하는

풍습이 여전히 행해지고 있다.

 

 

 

 

위의 사진들과 그에 관한 배경 스토리를  하나씩 천천히 읽어 내려가면서

인간들이 살면서 겪는 많은 희노애락들이 담긴 모습들이

자세한 글과 긴 말이 없어도

사진 하나에 하나에 참 많은 것을 시사해 주고 있다.

 

아울러 사진 기자들의 예리한 눈과 감정으로 카메라에 담은

사진들의 대단한위력과 생동감이

한장의 사진에서 강하게 느껴진다.

 

 

그리고,

우리 인간들의 다양한 생김새만큼 다양한 삶의 형태들과

인간들의  대단하고 아름다운 모습부터

아주 추악하고, 부끄럽고, 잔인한 모습까지 적나라하게 드러 내 보이면서

문제점을 제시하기도 하고, 따끔하게 무언의 질타를 하는 동시에

더 나아가서

원인과 해결책을 서로 모색해서

좀 더 밝고 희망찬 지구촌을 우리가 만들어야 한다는

과제를 우리 모두에게 남겨 주기도 한다.

 

 

과거 10년 정도 월드 프레스에서 수상한 사진들을 보면서

늘 안타깝게 생각하는 점은

수상작의 대부분이 밝고, 재미나고, 기쁘고, 행복하고 뿌듯한 이야기들보다

유감스럽게도 인간의 어두운 면이 강조된 잔인하고, 슬프고, 창피하고,

반복되어서는 안되는 비극적인 뉴스를 담은 사진들이 는 수장작에 뽑히는 점이다

 

앞으로는 조금 더 긍정적이고 희망적인 사건들을 담은 멋진 사진들이

최고의 상을 차지 하기를 감히 바래 본다.
