헨델의 메시야 공연부터 계속 이어지는 크리스마스 합창 공연들..

에드몬톤이 자랑하는 Winspere Centre 내부의 멋진 모습이다.

2010년 RES Messiah 공연 시작 하기 직전에 몰래..

 

 

크리스마스가 시작되는 대림절이 되면

올해도 어김없이 헨델의 오라토리오 메시아 합창공연이

12월 7일 금요일 저녁에 윈스피어 뮤직센터에서 열렸다.

 

나를 포함해서 많은 클래식 음악 팬들은

메시아 공연을 보고나서야 비로서 크리스마스 분위기가 실감이 나기에

올해도 객석을 가득 메운 청중들의 환호 속에서

예수님의 탄생, 고난 그리고 부활의 이야기가 묘사된

메시아 공연을 잘 마쳤다.

 

올해 에시야 공연의 합창은

알버타 대학교에서 성악을 전공하는 사람들로 이루어진

매드리갈 싱어즈가 맡았는데합창단의 규모가 크지 않아서

RES 합창단에서 37명이 함께 공동으로 합창곡을 연주했으며

아래에 소개된 독창자들과 에드몬톤 심포니 오케스트라와 함께

메시야 전곡을 무대에 올렸다.

    메시야의 배경

 

오라토리오 메시아는 죠지 프레데릭 헨델이 1741년 여름에 24일 만에 영국 런던에서 작곡했으며

가사는 Charles Jennen 이 제임스 왕 성경(King James Bible)에서 인용해서 지어졌다.

1742년 4월 13일에 아일랜드의 더블린에서 수난 기간 중에 교회가 아닌 일반 극장에서 초연이 되었다.

 

오라토리오는 오페라와 비슷하다고 볼 수 있다.

오페라처럼 주로 오케스트라, 합창단과 독창자들이 극중 인물로 등장해서 스토리를 전하는 점이 비슷하나

오페라는 무대에서 분장을 하고 의상을 입고 연기를 하는 데에 비해서

오라토리오는 무대에서 연주되는 노래 가사로만 스토리가 소개되는 점이 다르다고 하겠다.

 

메시아는 구원자를 뜻하며 또 히브리어로 기름 부음을 받은 자 (영어로는 Annointed) 라는 뜻도 가지고 있다.

크리스찬에게는 메시아가 곧 예수 그리스도이며, 이곡은 예수의 생애와 고난을 그린 곡으로

예수의 생애에 따라서 3부로 구성되어 있다.

 

제 1부는 예수님의 탄생에 관한 예언을 주제로 이사야 서와 마태복음

성서에서 인용된 성서구절이 가사로 사용되고,

2부는 예수님의 수난과 부활, 승천 그리고 그리스도의 복음으로 이루어져 있다.

그리고 마지막 3부는 요한 묵시록에 나오는 내용을 바탕으로 끝을 맺는다.

 

따라서 1부는 성탄시기에 많이 연주되고

2부와 3부는 부활절 전인 수난절에 많이 공연된다.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

  Part one 

OVERTURE (서곡)

 

 

 

RECITATIVE. (Accompanied - Tenor)  (내 백성을 위로하라, 이사야 40:1-3)

Comfort ye, comfort ye My people, saith your God;

speak ye comfortably to Jerusalem; and cry unto her,

that her warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity is pardoned.

The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness:

Prepare ye the way of the Lord:

make straight in the desert a highway for our God.   

AIR (Tenor) (모든 골짜기가 기뻐하리라, 이사야 40:4)
Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill made low,

the crooked straight and the rough places plain.

 

 

 

 

CHORUS  (주의 영광이 드러나리라, 이사야 40:5) 

And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed,

and all flesh shall see it together;

for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.

Thus saith the Lord of Hosts:

Yet once a little while and I will shake the heavens and the earth,

The Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to His temple,

even the messenger of the covenant,

whom ye delight in: behold, He shall come, saith the Lord of Hosts.

 But who may abide the day of His coming?

and who shall stand when Heappeareth?

And He shall purify the sons of Levi,

that they may offer unto the Lord an offering in righteousness.

Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a Son,

and shall call his name Emmanuel, God with us.

for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee.

(보라, 어둠이 온 땅에 덮으리라, 이사야 40:2-3)
For Behold, darkness shall cover the earth,

and gross darkness the people;

but the Lord shall rise upon thee,

and His glory shall be seen upon thee,

and the Gentiles shall come to thy light,

and kings to the brightness of thy rising.

 

 

 

 AIR (Bass)( 어둠 속을 걷는 사람들에게 밝은 빛이, 이사야 9:1)  

The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light; and they
that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined.

 

 

 

CHORUS (우리를 위해서 한 아기가 태어나리라, 이사야 9:6)
For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given,

and the government shall be upon His shoulder;

and His name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The Mighty God,

And lo! the angel of the Lord cam upon them,

and the glory of the Lord shone round about them,

and they were sore afraid.

(천사가 말하기를 두려워 말라 나는 좋은 소식과 기쁨을 전하려고 왔다, 루가 2:10-12)
And the angel said unto them, Fear not; for behold I bring you good tidings of great joy,

which shall be to all people; for unto you is born this day in the City of David,

a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

RECITATIVE. (Accompanied - Soprano)

(갑자기 천사와 만군이 주님을 찬양하며,  루가 2:13)

And suddenly there was with the angel a
multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying:

thy King cometh unto thee! He is the righteous Saviour,

Then shall the eyes of the blind be opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped;

이번 돌아오는 주말인 12월 14일 낮 12시에는

윈스페어 센터에서 12회 크리스마스 뷰로 캐롤 싱얼롱이 열린다.

이 공연은 우리 합창단원이자 방송국의 피디로 오래 일하신

요헨씨가 주관을 하고

예전 합창단원이었던 Joy Berg 씨의 바톤으로

에드먼튼 시내의 여러합창단원들이 무대에 서서

크리스마스 캐롤을 주도하면 오신 청중들이 함께 싱얼롱을 하는 행사이다.

 

이 공연의 목적은 도시의 불우이웃을 돕기 위한 자선공연으로서

이날 오신 분들이 티켓을 사는 대신에

기부하신 전액을 자선단체인 크리스마스 뷰로의 기금으로 쓰여진다.

Fa la la la la …….ah, Christmas music, and you get to sing along, or you can sit back

and enjoy the exquisite talent of Edmontons pro-coro choir community organized by Jochen Eggert.

For a donation to the Christmas Bureau of Edmonton,

you can enjoy some beautiful Christmas music on Friday, December 14 from noon till 1 pm

and the Winspear Centre in downtown Edmonton at the 12th Annual Christmas Bureau Caroling Sing-Along.

Doors open at 11:30 am so arrive early as seats fill fast for this holiday tradition.

Seating is general adminission on the day of the event. There is no pre-booking of tickets or seats.
Admission is by donation and on a first come basis.

 

 

이어서 12월 20일 목요일 밤에는 RES 합창단이 에으먼튼 심포니 오케스트라와 함께

같은 장소인 윈스피어 센터에서 스티븐 라이네키의 지휘로 크리스마스 공연이 예정되어 있어서

바쁘지만 즐거운 기분으로 크리스마스를 준비해 본다.
