2013년 4월 5일과 6일 저녁에

에드먼턴의 알버타 대학 근처에 위치한 The Northern Jubilee Auditorium 무대에서

알버타 발레단의 2012-13년의 정기공연이 화려하게 열렸다.

 

 

공연 2부의 무대는 모짜르트의 레퀴엠 음악에 맞추어서 안무된 작품이 올려졌는데

무대 뒷편에서 아름다운 선율의 곡을 부르는 우리 RES 합창단의 모습이 보인다.

 

 

무대 가운데에 모짜르트 역을 맡은 일본 출신 댄서 Yuchichi Hattori와 알버타 발레단원들...

 

 

이번 공연에 주연댄서이기도 하고 공연의 1부 Pomp Without Circumstance 안무도 맡은

Requiem Mass by W. A. Mozart

 

레퀴엠 미사곡은 세상을 떠난 사람을 기리기 위해서 위한 미사 중에 부르는 노래들로서

라틴어의 "안식, 쉼"을 뜻하는 말에서 유래한다.

많은 작곡가들이 레퀘엠 미사곡을 작곡했지만 모짜르트의 레퀴엠처럼

작곡배경부터 온갖 미스테리와 루머와 베일에 쌓인 곡도 없을 것 같다.

1984년에 제작된  "아마데우스" 영화는 흥행을 위해서 사실보다 가정을 바탕으로 만들어져서

이 곡을 둘러 싼 의혹과 미스테리는 더 깊어졌다.

 

이 레퀴엠은 프란츠 폰 발제크(Franz von Walsegg) 백작이 1791년 7월에 대리인을 통해서

그의 부인의 기일을 기념하기 위해서 모짜프트에게 거금을 주겠다는 조건으로

(반은 착수금으로, 나머지 반은 완성이 된 주기로) 의뢰로 작곡이 되었다.

의뢰를 한 발제크 백작 자신은 아마추어 음악가이자 다수의 음악가들의 후원자로서

그의 저택에서 연주회가 자주 개최되기도 했고,

작곡가들에게 사례를 주고 작품을 의뢰를 한 후에, 자신이 작곡가로 행세를 종종 했는데

이런 사태는 의뢰인이나 작곡가들도 서로 잘 알면서도 모른 척 넘어 가 주곤 했다.

따라서, 모짜르트에게 레퀘엠을 의뢰했을 때도 그의 심중엔 이러한 의도가 숨겨져 있을거라고

의혹을 받고 있지만 정확한 것은 지금까지도 알려진 바가 없다.

 

모짜르트는 7월에 의뢰를 받았지만 그해 여름에 작곡의뢰가 몰려 들어서

10월이 되서야 작곡에 착수하기 시작했는데,

불행하게도 건강이 악화되어서, 레퀴엠을 완성하지 못한 채

1791년 12월 5일에 세상을 떠나고 말았다.

 

모짜르트가 이 레퀴엠 작품을 완성하지 않은 것은 확실하지만,

얼마만큼의 곡이 그의 손에 작곡이 되었고, 미완성된 부분은 누가 마무리를 했는지도

정확하게 알려지지 않았는데, 제일 큰 이유는 모짜르트의 아내였던 콘스탄짜였다.

미망인이 된 그녀는 경제적인 부담까지 고스란히 물려 받게 되자,

이곡을 의뢰했던 백작에게 나머지 반의 돈을 받을 목적으로 모짜르트가 완성를 한 것처럼 보이려고

우선 요셉 폰 아이블러(Joseph von Eybler)에게 작곡 부탁을 했는데

얼마간 작곡을 시도하다가 세상을 떠난 친구 모짜르트를 존경하고 누를 끼치고 싶지 않아서

작곡을 포기하고 콘스탄짜에게 미완성의 곡을 도로 돌려 주었다.

 

그러자 콘스탄짜는 모짜르트의 제자이기도 하고 병으로 죽어가는 모짜르트 대신에

악보를 써 주기도 했던 프란츠 수스마이르(Franz Sussmayr)에게 작곡을 부탁했다.

수스마이르가 모짜르트의 제자인지에 대해서 의혹을 제기하는 자도 있지만,

의뢰를 맡은 그는 작곡 완성을 위해서 열심히 노력끝에 이듬해인 1792년에 초반에 이 곡을 완성했다.

1793년 말에 위조된 모짜르트의 사인이 쓰인 완성된 레퀴엠 악보가

이 곡을 의뢰했던 백작에게 헌정이 되었고,

그로부터 수십년간 모짜르트의 측근인 극소수의 사람들을 제외하고는

많은 사람들은 모짜르트가 이 작품 전곡을 작곡했다고 믿고 있었지만

1820년대에 들어서서 과연 이곡의 작곡자는 누구인지 논란이 생기기 시작했다.

 

레퀴엠의 첫 곡인 Intoitus 전곡과 두번째 곡인 키리에와

Sequence의 첫 5부의 성악파트와 베이스 파트는 모짜르트에 의해서 쓰여졌고,

sequence의 오케스트라 파트는 완성하지 못했지만 그의 의도를 확실하게 남겨 두었기에

위에 곡들은 모짜르트가 작곡자임을 알 수 있다.

레퀴엠에서 제일 사랑받는 곡인 6부곡인 Lacrimosa는 불과 첫 8마디와

Offertorim 의 Domine Jesu의 일부가 모짜르트에 의해서 작곡되었고,

나머지 Sanctus, Agnus Dei and Communion의 대부분은

수스마이르에 의해서 완성이 되었다는 견해가 많다.

 

중요한 것은 모짜르트가 시작해서 수스마이르가 완성한 이 곡은

오랫동안 청중들로 꾸준히 사랑을 받고 있는 점이다.

III. Sequence
1. Dies irae	분노의 날
Dies irae, dies illa Solvet saeclum in favilla, teste David cum Sibylla. Quantus tremor est futurus, quando judex est venturus, cuncta stricte discussurus!	Day of wrath, day of anger will dissolve the world in ashes, as foretold by David and the Sibyl. Great trembling there will be when the Judge descends from heaven to examine all things closely.
2. Tuba mirum	트럼펫 소리가 울려퍼지고
Tuba mirum spargens sonum per sepulcra regionum, coget omnes ante thronum.	The trumpet will send its wondrous sound throughout earth's sepulchres and gather all before the throne.
Mors stupebit et natura, cum resurget creatura, judicanti responsura. Liber scriptus proferetur, in quo totum continetur, unde mundus judicetur.	Death and nature will be astounded, when all creation rises again, to answer the judgement. A book will be brought forth, in which all will be written, by which the world will be judged.
Judex ergo cum sedebit, quidquid latet, apparebit, nil inultum remanebit.	When the judge takes his place, what is hidden will be revealed, nothing will remain unavenged.
Quid sum miser tunc dicturus? quem patronum rogaturus, cum vix justus sit securus?	What shall a wretch like me say? Who shall intercede for me, when the just ones need mercy?
3. Rex tremendae	위엄의 왕이시여, 저를 구하소서
Rex tremendae majestatis, qui salvandos savas gratis, salve me, fons pietatis.	King of tremendous majesty, who freely saves those worthy ones, save me, source of mercy.
4. Recordare	인자하진 예수여, 저를 기억해 주소서
Recordare, Jesu pie, quod sum causa tuae viae; ne me perdas illa die. Quaerens me, sedisti lassus, redemisti crucem passus; tantus labor non sit cassus. Juste judex ultionis, donum fac remissionis ante diem rationis. Ingemisco, tamquam reus: culpa rubet vultus meus; supplicanti parce, Deus. Qui Mariam absolvisti, et latronem exaudisti, mihi quoque spem dedisti. Preces meae non sunt dignae, sed tu, bonus, fac benigne, ne perenni cremer igne. 5. Confutatis
Confutatis maledictis, flammis acribus addictis, voca me cum benedictus. Oro supplex et acclinis, cor contritum quasi cinis, gere curam mei finis.	When the accused are confounded, and doomed to flames of woe, call me among the blessed. I kneel with submissive heart, my contrition is like ashes, help me in my final condition.
6. Lacrimosa	눈물의 날
Lacrimosa dies illa, qua resurget ex favilla judicandus homo reus. Huic ergo parce, Deus, pie Jesu Domine, dona eis requiem. Amen.	That day of tears and mourning, when from the ashes shall arise, all humanity to be judged. Spare us by your mercy, Lord, gentle Lord Jesus, grant them eternal rest. Amen.
IV.  Offertory	봉헌예식
I. Domine Jesu	주 예수 그리스도여, 영광의 왕이시여
Domine Jesu Christe, Rex gloriae, libera animas omnium fidelium defunctorum de poenis inferni et de profundo lacu. Libera eas de ore leonis, ne absorbeat eas tartarus, ne cadant in obscurum. Sed signifer sanctus Michael repraesentet eas in lucem sanctam. Quam olim Abrahae promisisti et semini ejus.	Lord Jesus Christ, King of glory, liberate the souls of the faithful, departed from the pains of hell and from the bottomless pit. Deliver them from the lion's mouth, lest hell swallow them up, lest they fall into darkness.  Let the standard-bearer, holy Michael, bring them into holy light.  Which was promised to Abraham and his descendants.
2. Hostias	희생제물과 기도
Hostias et preces tibi, Domine, laudis offerimus. Tu sucipe pro animabus illis, quaram hodie memoriam facimus. Fac eas, Domine, de morte transire ad vitam, Quam olim Abrahae promisisti et semini ejus.     Santus Sanctus. Sanctus, Sanctus, Dominus Deus Sabaoth! Pleni suni coeli et terra gloria tua. Receive them in behalf of those souls we commemorate today.
