This Mortal Coil RES 합창단 공연 2부-Serenade to Music & When Icicles Hang

일요일 아침에 가진 총연습 중...

2016년 3월 13일 일요일 저녁에 셰익스피어 서거 400주년을 맞이해서

올 시즌 RES 합창단 세번째 공연의 테마로 셰익스피어 작품을 토대로 작곡된

합창곡 작품으로 1부에 이어서

2부 무대  주로 셰익스피어를 주제로 한 합창곡들이 선을 보였다.

2부의 첫번째 레파토리는 영국 작곡가 반 윌리엄즈(Ralph Vaughan Williams)의 작품중

가장 사랑을 받는 작품인 세레나드("Serenade to Music)로

서정적이고 낭만적인 바이올린 선률로 청중의 귀를 사로잡는다.

가사는 셰익스피어의 희곡 베니스의 상인(The Merchant of Venice)에서 나오는 대사중에

음악의 대단함과 힘을 묘사한 글을 인용해서 곡이 만들어졌다.

이 작품은 1938년에  알버트 홀에서 작곡가가 직접 뽑은 16명의 솔리스트들의 목소리로 초연되었고,

얼마 후, 윌리엄즈는 4명의 솔리스트, 합창단과 오케스트라를 위해서 재구성을 해서

1951년에 작곡가의 지휘로 로얄 페스티발 홀의 개관 축하 기념 공연 무대에 올려졌고,

지휘자 레너드 번슈타인도 1962년에 이 세레나드 작품을 뉴욕 링컨 센터 내의

애버리 피셔 홀(Avery Fisher Hall) 개관 첫 연주회의 레퍼토리로 연주되기도 했다.

그리고 이 개관 첫 연주회에 초빙된 러시아의 작곡가이자 피아니스트인 라흐마니노프가

자신이 쓴 피아노 협주고 2번을 연주하면서 이 곡을 처음 들은 그는 감동한 나머지 눈물을 흘렸다고 한다.

지휘자 Len Ratzlaff  님이 두 타악기 주자와 담소하고 있다.

2부 공연 두번째 레퍼토리는 현대 합창곡 작곡가로 널리 잘 알려진 존 러터(John Rutter)가 작곡한

"When Icicles Hang" 합창곡이었다.

이 작품은 6개의 악장으로 이루어진 연가로 테너 솔로, 합창단과 오케스트라를 위해서

1973년에 작곡되었는데, 특별히 그래미 음악상 수상 경력이 있는

유명한 완즈워드(Wandsworth School Boys Choir) 소년 합창단을 위해서 쓰여졌다.

6부 중에 2곡은 셰익스피어의 글로, 한곡은 그와 같은 시대에 활동했던 시인

토마스 캠피언과 나머지 세곡은 중세기와 르네상스에 무명작가에 의해 쓰여진 시들을 토대로 작곡되었으며,

겨울철의 아름다운 풍경과 일상을 묘사하고 있다.

1악장은 겨울철 고드름에 관해서 가볍고 경쾌한 템포의 노래이며,

2악장은 아름다운 겨울밤을 노래하며,

3악장은 추운 겨울에 맛좋은 술과 음식을 먹으면서 즐기는 노래이며,

4악장은 맑고 청아한 멜로디로 겨울철 바람을 묘사한 노래로 개인적으로

서정적인 가사와 멜로디로 제일 좋아하는 노래이다.

5악장은 겨울의 외로움을 마지막 6악장은 크리스마스와 새해를 기쁘게 맞이하는

신나는 노래로 끝을 맺는다.

2. 겨울밤: Winter Nights(by Thomas Campion)

3. 맛좋은 맥주: Good Ale (15th century)

6. Hay, Ay(Anon. c. 1500)

다음 공연은 4월에 에드먼턴 심포니 오케스트라와 함께

헐리웃 영화 주제가들을 모은 레퍼토리로 이틀간 공연회가 예정되어 있고,

6월엔 캘거리 오케스트라 창단 60주년을 기념하는 축하공연에 초대되어서

'천명의 심포니'라는 닉네임이 붙은 구스타프 말러작의 걸작품 심포니 8번을

 캘거리 오케스트라와 합창단과 협연을 할 예정이어서

바쁜 일정이 계속 이어진다.

그리고 2013년 여름에 가진 독일 순회공연에 이어서

2017년에는 13일간 영국으로 순회공연을 계획하고 있어서

이미 1년 전부터 위원회가 만들어져서 준비작업에 들어가서

벌써부터 가슴이 설레인다.
