미로의 초기 작품 속의 주인공은 미로의 친구이자 

바르셀로나에 소재한 그들의 스튜디오를

함께 사용하는 엔릭 리카르트 씨이다.

이 작품은 추상적인 면과 표현주의, 그리고 포비즘 등

다양한 스타일의 화풍을 조합해서 그린 초상화이다.

1920년에 처음으로 파리로 방문했다가

이듬해에 다시 파리로 돌아가서 그린 이 정물화의 등장한 사물들은

미로가 사용하던 장갑과 지팡이, 신문, 물병으로

그는 카탈로니아 출신인 그가 이국인 파리에서 거주하면서 

고향에 대한 자부심과 그리움을 담아서 타지에서 활동하는 카탈란 화가를 묘사했다.

재미난 점은 그의 접힌 프랑스어 신문인 'Le Journal' 페이지에 적힌 단어

lejos는 스페인어로 '멀리 떨어짐'을 뜻하는데,

이는 미로가 활동하는 파리와 바르셀로나 사이의 먼 거리를 표현해 주고 있다.

미로는 샌드페이퍼, 못, 석고, 삼각자, 머리카락 등 다양하고 평범한 재료를 사용해서

콜라지 방식으로 춤을 추는 에로틱한 여인의 신체를 묘사했다.

피카소는 이 정물화 작품을 보고는 "이 그림은 시다."라고 평했다.

이 정물화는 어떤 목적인지는 잘 알 수 없는 세 개의 물체가 

역시 불투명한 공간에 매달려 있다.

배경색인 회색과 짙은 주황색은 바닥이나 테이블 혹은 조명일 가능성도 있으며,

작품 속의 석유램프, 썬 토마토 그리고 철 스탠드는

몬트로이크에 위치한 미로의 농장에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 물체들이다.

미로는 그의 농장이 있는 스페인 몬트로이크에서 이 작품을 그리면서,

 "나는 이미 자연과 풍경에서 벗어나서, 현실과 동떨어진 작품을 그릴 것이다.

하지만 이 작품은 어느 때보다 가장 몬트로이크다운 그림이다."라고 말했다.

미로는 한 농부가 점심을 준비하기 위해서 바베큐에 불을 피우는 모습을 그리기 시작했다가

그가 그 후로 늘 그의 작품에 반복해서 사용하던 도식적인 사인들을 사용해서

미래적이고 멋진 풍경화로 진보하게 되었다.

그는 "가운데에 보이는 눈은 그림의 눈으로 나를 응시하고 있다."라고 얘기했다.

이 작품은 1661년에 네덜란드 출신 화가 헨드릭 소르흐/Sorgh가 그린

'루트 연주자/The Lute Player가 인쇄된 엽서를 미로가 

암스테르담에 소재한 라이크스뮤지엄에서 이 그림을 그리기 전 몇 달 전에 사서

스튜디어에 붙여놓고 보면서 그렸다.

그는 사실주의적인 묘사보다는 원래 작품에서 루트 악기, 연주자의 머리와 

레이스로 주름진 칼라를 부각해서 이 작품을 제작했다.

1930년 여름부터 미로는 그림 작업은 뒤로 하고, 부조 작품의 가능성을 알아보기 위해서

다양한 소재로 부조 제작에 몰두했다.  이 작품은 목수의 일터에서 흔히 볼 수 있는

나무와 금속 조각들로 제작되었다.

그는 수직의 금속 스파이크와 작고 검은 원은 신체의 목과 머리를 표현하며,

뾰족한 못들이 박힌 붉고 둥근 물체는 태양을 표현한다고 밝혔다.
