Self-Portrait/자화상, 1638

by Huygh Pietersz Voskuyl (휴이흐 보스큘: Leiden 1592- 1665 Amsterdam)

Huygh Voskuyl looks out at us with a frown, as if we have interrupted him at work.

But in fact this is simply what the artist saw reflected in the mirror when he painted

his self-portrait.  His straggly hair, unshaven cheeks and unkempt moustache lend

this self-portrait  an air of informality unusual for portrait of the Dutch Golden Age.

Equally unusual if the wooden wall in the backgraound, which looks especially real

with its fine grain.  On it he has inscribed his signature and his age: 46

The Feast of the Gods at the Wedding of Peleus and Thetis, 1638

펠레우스와 테티스의 혼인잔치에서 벌린 신들의 향연

by Abrahm Bloemaert (아브람 블러메르트: Gorinche 1566-1651 Utrecht)

In Bloemaert's painting of the wedding feast of Peleus and Thetis,

the happy couple are nowhere to be seen.  The real subject is the moment Eris,

the goddes of strife, throuws a golden apple inscribed with 'for the fairest' down to the table.

The supreme ruler Jupiter dares not judge himself and instead asks Paris to hand the apple

to either Juno, or Venus.  Paris chooses Venus, with her splendid pale back.

His judgement leads to a drmatic end to the feast, and ultimately sparks the Trojan War.

William V purchased this painting at an auction at the age of 23.  It was one of the last pieces

he acquired for his collectio, but with it he was adding a painting that brought an enduring word

of warning to rulers: look out for judgements like that of Paris, as they will only bring misery.

Interior with Figures in a Picture Gallery, 1667-1672

갤러리 내부와 인물들

by Gonzales Coques(코케: Antwerp 1614-1694 Antwerp)

Pictures showing rooms full of paintings and other works of art are known as gallery painting

(kunstkamers).  It was a genre that flourished in 17th century Antwerp.  This particular gallery

painting is unusual since as many as twenty artists worked on it.

Each artist contributed one or more of the miniature paintings, co-ordinated by Gonzales Coques,

who also painted the figures in the foreground.  For a contemporary viewer of a group work like this,

it would have been great fun to see who could recognize the most masters.

There is so much to see in this floral still life by Abraham Mignon: flowers in full bloom,

overripe fruit and in the bottom left hand corner, two mice busy with an ear of corn.

Floral still lifes liek this were much loved in the 18th century: William V's great-grand-mother

Princess Henriette Amalia, had a number of floral still lifes by Mignon in her collection at

Oranienstein Castle in Diez, near Frankfurt.  These works later came into the possession of the

prince, who in 1775 broght the paintings from Oranienstein to The Hague for his Gallery.
