Edward Kennedy 의 장례식을 보면서....

어제 토요일 아침에 에드워드 케네디 상원의원의 긴 시간에 걸쳐서 치루어진 장례 미사가

미국 보스턴에 있는 영원하 도움의 성모님 대성당에서 많은 사람들의 애도속에서 거행되었습니다.

 

1991년에 만난 레바니즈 카톨릭 명문가 출신이자 은행 전문 변호사인

37세의 빅토리아에 사랑에 빠진 그는 다음해에 그녀와 결혼했다.

Kennedy fell in love with Victoria Reggie, the canny, razor-smart, beautiful 37-year-old daughter of old family friends, who was also a top banking lawyer. They married the next year. 그는 무려 47년간 메사추세츠 주 상원의원으로 활약해 오다가 77세에 세상을 떠나면서

케네디가의 한 세대를 마감했다.  케네디가의 9형제 중 막내로 태어난 그는

케네디 대통령을 비롯해서 쟁쟁한 3 형의 그늘에서 정치활동을 시작했지만

세형들 모두 일찍 세상을 떠나고 끝까지 케네디왕조의 대부로 남아서

그들이 못다한 일을 이어서 한 장본인이기도 하다.

그의 장례 미사는 그가 한때는 매일 가서 기도를 드리곤 하던 Our Lady of Perpetual Help Basilica

(영원한 도움의 성모님 대성당)에서 1500 여명의 가족, 조객들이 모인 가운데서

한분의 추기경님과, 여섯분의 신부님의 집전으로 치루어졌다.

주목 할 만한 것은 수십년간 서로 다른 정치적인 이념으로 대립하고 으르렁거리던

미국의 정계의 주요 인사와 가족이 한자리에 다 모여서 그의 죽음을 슬퍼한 사실이다.

 

장례 미사가 시작하기 전에

비가 부슬부슬 내리는데도 불구하고

그의 관을 실은 영구차가 그가 평생 살고 그곳으 시민을 위해서 일한

보스턴 시내를 천천히 움직였을 때

오랫동안 비가 오는 거리에서 우산을 쓰고 기다리던 많은 사람들이

그의 마지막 길을 지켜 보기도 했다.

 

목요일에 가족들이 모이 가운데 그의 운구는 하이니스 포트에 있는 그의 집에서 출발해서 존 케네디 대통령 도서관/박물관으로  운반되고 있다.

130년 된 성당 내부...

The Basilica of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, located in the Mission Hill section of Boston, is a 130-year-old Romanesque church known as a place of healing. Mr. Kennedy prayed there every day when his daughter Kara was being treated for lung cancer several years ago at a nearby hospital.

장례미사가 끝난 후에

그의 운구는 와싱턴으로 옮겨져서

간단한 의식을 거친 후에

토요일 저녁에 조촐하게 가족들이 모인 가운데

알링턴 묘지에 그의 두형들의 묘지에서  가까운 곳에 묻혔다.

죽어서 세 형제가 다 함께 한자리에 모인 셈이다.

Mr. Kennedy was buried between two large maple trees. The site was comparatively modest, about 100 feet from the grave and memorial site of Robert F. Kennedy, in turn a bit more than 100 feet from the Eternal Flame and burial site of President John F. Kennedy.

47년간을 미국의 의료제도와 빈곤층을 위해서 일 하다가 암으로 77세에 세상을 그를 애도하려고

그의 장례미사에 모인 사람들을 보면서 여러가지 생각이 머리에서 떠나지 않았다.

개인적으로 케네디가를 좋아하거나

케네디 상원의원의 지지자는 아니지만

성당 제대에서 오른쪽엔 현직 대통령과 전직 대통령 들을 비롯해서 여러 정계의 거물들이 자리를 했고

그 건너편에는 그의 직계 가족들이 자리를 하고 있음을 보고

그의 77세 생애에서 그가 가장 아끼고 사랑하던 두 면을 쉽게 알 수 있었다.

 

왼쪽의 많은 자리를 차지한 그의 가족과,

많은 조카들, 손자들은 한 세대의 마지막 주자이자 그들의 대부인 케네디를 잃은 셈이다.

세 형들이 비명에 일찍 세상을 떠나면서 남겨진 조카들의 아버지 역할을 떠 맡은

그의 자리가 새삼 커 보이리라.. 

저 위에 올린 1937년에 찍은 가족사진에서 이제 남은 사람은 달랑 하나로 남았지만

80년 이상이 흐른 지금까지 가족의 끈끈한 유대를 지키고 사는 제일 큰 이유는

그들의 아버지인 조셉 케네디와 어머니 로즈의 대단한 희생과 노력의 결실일거로 생각이 든다.

특히 matriarch 어머니 로즈 여사가 독실한 아이리쉬 캐톨릭 정신을 바탕으로

수많은 어려움 속에서도 지극 정성으로 많은 자녀들을 훌륭히 키운 유산이기도 할 수 있다.

아마도 하늘나라에서 그의 어머니께서 혼자서 아빠 노릇, 삼촌 노릇하느라

그동안 수고 많았다고그를 두팔로 맞아 주실 것 같다.

그도 편안히 무겁게 지니고 다니던 그의 바통을 기꺼이 다음 세대로 넘겨 주고 갔으리라...

 

 

오른쪽에 자리가 비좁게 꽉 채운 정계의 거물들이 엄숙하게 앉아 있는 모습에서는

오랜 세월동안 서로 다른 정치적인 이념으로 으르렁 거리던 적들과 같은 이념으로 걸어 온

동지들이 그의 죽음 앞에서 만큼은 하나로 그 자리에 모여서 유명을 달리한 그의 영원한

안식을 위해서 보인 일치정신이었다.  미국 사회에서 본받을 만한 것 중에 하나가

평화롭고 공평한 선거를 통해서 선출된 대통령들이 나라에 큰 일이 있을 때마다

과거의 정치 노선이나 이념을 떠나서 미국 시민의 한 사람으로서 함께 하는 점과

전직 대통령이 어떠한 경우에도 현직 대통령의 방침에 공식적으로 토를 달지 않고 그저 평민으로

묵묵히 살아가는 모습일 것이다.  이렇게 한자리에서 예전에 갈던 칼을 거두고

단지 미국을 위해서 47년간 시민의 권리를 위해서 일해 온 그를 기리는 그들의 모습에서

그의 순탄하지만 않았던 그의 정치적인 삶과 개인적인 삶이 헛되지 않았음을 알 수 있었다.

 

역시 우리네 삶에서 가장 중요한 것은

가족의 사랑과 남을 위해서 뭔가를 할 수 있는 일임을

오늘 케네디 상원의원의 장례 미사를 보면서 다시 한번 실감을 했다.
