베르디의 오페라 리골레토 (Rigoletto)

에드몬튼 오페라단이 베르디 작곡의 리골레토를 무대에 올리면서 올해 오페라 시즌 커텐을 올렸습니다.

이번 공연의 세명의 주역중 리골레토역에 바리톤 Theodore Baerg, 질다역에 소프라노 Tracy Dahl,

그리고 만투아 백작역에 Robert Dreault가 맡아서 고르게 높은 수준의 호소력이 담긴 목소리와

뛰어난 연기력으로 오페라의 막이 내릴 때까지 청중의 집중과 관심을 모으면서

감동의 세찬 박수를 받고 성공적으로 공연을 마쳤습니다.

특히 질다역을 맡은 Tracy Dahl의 Caro Nome는 오랜만에 테크닉면으로나 청중들에게 커다란 감동과

공감을 일으키는 열창을 해서 나를 포함해서 많은 청중들의 기립박수를 그녀에게 보내 주어서 몇번의 커튼콜을 받았다.

 

리골레토는 많은 음악 전문가들이 베르디의 중/후기 작품 중에 그의 첫 걸작품으로 꼽고 있는 오페라로서

아직도 많은 사람들에게 여전히 사랑을 받고 있는 비극 오페라이다.

이야기의 줄거리와 가사가 담긴 libretto는 우리에게 잘 알려진 불란서의 Victor Hugo(빅터 유고)작의

희곡 Le roi s'amuse 를 Francesco Maria Piave(피아베)씨가 이태리어로 썼다.

이 오페라는 1851년 3월 11일에 이태리 베니스에서 La Fenice 극장에서 초연되었다.

 

리골레토의 시놉시스

Act I

Scene 1

At a ball at the ducal court of Mantua, the hunchbacked jester Rigoletto mocks the courtiers

cuckolded by the profligate Duke, stirring them to plans of vengeance.

Count Monterone appeals to the Duke for the return of his dishonoured daughter,

but is cruelly mocked by Rigoletto.

Enraged, Monterone calls down a father's curse on the terrified jester.

 

1500년대의 이태리 만투아 공작의 성에서 가진 무도회장에서 바람둥이 공작은 그의 가장 최근에 손안에 넣은 정부

체파노 백작부인을 여러 귀족들 앞에서 자랑하자 궁정광대인 리골레토 공작을 비롯해서 귀족들을 독살적인 말로

무안을 준다.  한편 몬테로네 백작이 나타나서 그의 딸을 유혹한 만투아 공작과 광대 리골레토에게 저주를 한다.  

Scene 2

Outside his house, Rigoletto encounters Sparafucile, a professional assassin,

but has no need of his services.

Rigoletto warns his daughter Gilda to remain concealed in their home.

She does not reveal to him that she has fallen in love

with a handsome young man she has encountered on her way to church.

The object of her affections is the Duke, who appears as soon as Rigoletto has left,

bribing Gilda's nurse to admit him and to speak well of him to Gilda.

He tells her he is a poor student. After he leaves, the courtiers come to abduct Gilda,

believing her to be Rigoletto's mistress. They trick Rigoletto into assisting them,

assuring him that it is the Countess Ceprano they are abducting from the neighboring house.

When he realizes what has happened, he is distraught. He remembers the curse.

 

근심에 찬 리골레토는 전문 암살자인 스파라푸칠레를 만나지만 아직은 그의 도움이 필요없다고 얘기한다.

그는 떨 질다에게 집안에서 조용히 숨어 지내라고 당부를 하지만

질다는 이미 교회를 오가면서 만난 청년과 사랑에 빠졌노라고 아버지에게 얘기를 하지 못한다.

그 청년은 바람둥이 공작이며 질다의 유모에게 뇌물을 주고 리골레토가 집을 비운 사이에

들어와서 가지는 가난한 학생이라고 하면서 질다에게 자기도 역시 사랑을 한다고 고백한다.

그가 떠나자 귀족들이 몰려와서 질다를 리골레토의 정부인줄 알고 질다를 유괴해 간다.

딸이 유괴 된 것을 안 리골레트는 수심에 차고 백작의 저주를 상기한다.

 

Act II

The courtiers describe their abduction of Gilda to the Duke.

He is delighted to discover that she has been brought to his palace

and awaits him in his bedroom. Rigoletto now enters, feigning indifference

but desperately seeking signs of the whereabouts of his daughter.

When he realizes what has happened he first curses,

then pleads with the courtiers for her return,

but to no avail.

Gilda appears en deshabille, and Rigoletto swears vengeance on the Duke.

귀족무리들은 유괴한 질다를 공작의 침실로 데려다 주고 비록 리골레토의 정부가 아니지만

질다임을 알고 내심 좋아한다.   리골레토는 딸을 찾으러 궁으로 와서 그 무리들에게

딸을 돌려 달라고 애원을 하지만 그들은 그를 무시한다.

리골레토는 질다가 공작과 함께 있는 것을 알자 복수를 하기로 맘을 굳힌다.

 

Act III

The Duke has been lured to a remote inn by Sparafucile's sister Maddalena.

Rigoletto has paid Sparafucile to kill the Duke and to deliver his body in a sack

so that he may himself throw it into the Mincio.

Rigoletto brings Gilda with him to spy on the inn,

hoping to reinforce the notion that the Duke is not a man of honour in affairs of the heart.

Gilda is unimpressed. Rigoletto sends her home to change into men's clothing

for their flight to Verona. Infatuated with the Duke herself,

Maddalena begs her brother to spare him and to murder the jester instead.

His sense of professional responsibility offended,

Sparafucile refuses, but does go so far as to agree

that if anyone else should happen to show up at the inn on this wild and stormy night,

he will murder them instead. Gilda, returning and hearing all this,

sees her chance to help the man she loves.

She boldly walks up to the door of the inn, knocks, is admitted

and promptly stabbed and stuffed into the sack for Rigoletto.

Rigoletto is just about to throw the sack in the river

when he hears the Duke still singing in the inn.

Wildly he opens the sack to find his dying daughter,

who with her last breath assures him that she will pray for him with her mother in heaven.

Again, Rigoletto recalls Monterone's curse.

 

복수에 불타는 리골레토는 공작을 암살하려고 부탁한 스파라푸칠레는 그의 여동생 마달레나의 도움으로

공작을 그의 집으로 유인한다. 마달레나를 유혹하면서 그는 유명한 La Donna e mobile 아리아를 부른다.

리골레토는 그에게 선금을 건내주면서 일단 공작을 죽인 후에 자루에 넣어주면 자기가 직접 강물에 던지겠노라고 말한다.

리골레토는 질다를 그곳으로 데리고 가서 공작이 가나한 학생이 아니라 바람둥이 귀족임을 보여 주지만

믿지 않으려고 하는 질다를 멀리 베로나로 보내기 위해서 남장을 하고 오라고 이른다.

한편 공작에게 역시 맘이 이끌린 마달레나는 오빠에게 돈은 이미 받았으니 공작을 살려 주고

대신 리골레토를 죽이라고 부탁한다.  남장을 한 후에 공작이 걱정이 되어서 다시 그들이 묵고 있는 여인숙으로 돌아 온

질다는 그 얘기를 엿듣고 공작부터 살리려는 맘으로 대신 죽기로 결심하고

여인숙의 문들 두드려서 암살자의 칼에 공작 대신 죽는다.  시체를 자루에 담아서 건네 받은 리골레토는

그 자루를 강물에 던지려다가 아직도 살아있는 공작의 노래를 듣고 자루를 열어 본다.

자루안에서 죽어가는 질다를 껴 안고 리골레토는 통곡을 하면서 몬테로네의 저주를 기억 해 낸다.

 

 

 

리골레토 중에서 가장 잘 알려진 아리아 네곡들... 

 

3막 초반에 만투아 백작이 암살자의 여동생이자 공범자인 마달레나에게 추파를 던지면서 부르는

La Donna e mobile를 로베르토 알라냐의 미성으로.... 

 

광대 리골레토의 숨겨 놓은 딸 질다가 교회를 오가면서 만난 백작과(가난한 학생으로 믿고) 사랑에 빠져서

기쁨에 넘쳐서 부르Caro Nome 아리아를 조수미 님이 열창...  벨칸토의 묘미가 잘 들어나는 아리아이다.
