[전쟁영시14]11월 11일 Remembrance Day에 읽어 보는 In Flanders Fields

 

 

 

 

 

매년 북미와 유럽의 몇 나라에서는 11월 11일을 

전쟁터에서 목숨을 받친 군인들의 영혼을 추모하는 날로 정해 놓았습니다.

캐나다에서는 이날을 Rememberance Day 라고 불리우고

미국에서는 Veterans Day 라고 하기도 하고

Armistice Day (세계 1차 대전 휴전 기념일)이기도 합니다.

 

작년 이맘때에 전쟁터에서 숨져 간 많은 군인들의 영혼을 위로하고

그들의 희생을 추앙하는 날인

Remembrance Day 에 전쟁을 주제로 한 많은 시들 가운데에서

가장 우리들에게 잘 알려진  In Flanders Fields 시를 올렸었다.

 

이 시는 캐나다 출신인 의사이자, 교수였던 존

매크레(John McCrae)  씨가 1차 세계 대전중에

벨지움의 이프레에서 군의관으로 참전하면서 직접 목격한

전쟁의 참혹함을 거의 즉흥적으로 지은 시로서

함께 나누어 읽어 보려고 턱없이 부족한 한글 번역과 함께 올렸었는데

이번에 재시도한 번역과 함께 다시 한번 올려 봅니다.

IN FLANDERS FIELDS the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

 

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

 

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.

 

If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
