헨델의 메시아 (Handel's Messiah) 공연

나는 어려서부터 여러 합창단에서 활동을 하면서

해마다 12월에 헨델의 메시아를 자그만치 60번 이상을 무대에서 공연을 했다. 

알토 솔로로 공연 한적도 있고,

소프라노와 알토 합창 파트도 수십번 불러서

악보가 거의 필요 없을 정도로 눈과 귀에 익숙한 노래이다

 

지금 내가 활동하고 있는 Richard Eaton Singers 합창단도

50여 전에 창단 이후로 3년 전까지 40년 이상을 크리스마스 시즌만 되면

터줏대감마냥 해마다 적어도 두번 내지는 세번을 이 메시아 곡을

에드몬톤 심포니 오케스트라와 함께 무대에 올려 왔습니다.

그런데 시내에 있는 다른 합창단들에게도 (알버타 대학교 합창단, Pro Coro Professional choir)

기회를 주기를 에드몬톤 심포니의 결정에 따라서

우리 합창단은 매년 해 오던 이 연례 행사를 3-4년 만에 공연하게 되었다.

사실 같은 곡을 40여년간 계속해서 그것도 매년 두세번을 공연하다 보면

식상해지기도 하고, 조금은 지겨워지기도 했었는데

막상 이 멋진 곡을 몇년만에 공연의 기회가 주어 진다는 말을 처음 전해 들었을 때

너무도 서운하고 우리 것을 남에게 빼앗겼다는 배신감까지 들 정도로 크게 낙담을 했다.

이렇게 우리들은 왕왕 우리에게 항상 덤으로 받은 여러가지 선물을 당연히 생각하고 소중하게 여기지 않다가

정작 늘 우리곁에 있던 그 선물을 잃었을 때, 비로서 그 소중함을 새삼 깨닫는 어리석은 삶의 반복인가 보다.

 

그나마 다행스러운 일은

내 자신이 수십번을 8개의 합창단을 거치면서 이곡을 무대에서 직접 공연을 해 왔지만

정작 객석에 앉아서 무대에서 공연을 해야하는 긴장감없이

느긋하게 남이 공연하는 걸 들은 적이 거의 없었는데

올해는 알버타 대학교 음대 성악 전공자들로 구성된

University of Alberta Madrigal Singers 와 I Coristi Chamber Choir 의 공연을

무대 위가 아니라 객석에서 감상할 계획이다.

거의 외우다시피 한 이 곡의 전주만 들어도 자동적으로 따라 부르지나 않을까 벌써부터 우려가 된다.

우리 귀에 익은 할렐루야 코러스를 부를 때는 관중 모두 일어서서 다 함께 부를 때에나

그동안 따라 부르고 싶어서 근질근질한 목소리로 힘차게 불러 봐야겠다.

Jean-Marie Zeitouni returns to conduct the ESO's annual performance of Handel's Messiah.

Featuring four young singers making their ESO debut

and two of Edmonton's finest chamber choirs,

this is truly one of the world's most cherished works of faith and inspiration.

 

 

 오라토리오 메시아는 죠지 프레데릭 헨델이 1741년 여름에 24일 만에 영국 런던에서 작곡했으며

가사는 Charles Jennen 이 제임스 왕 성경(King James Bible)에서 인용해서 지어졌다. 

1742년 4월 13일에 아일랜드의 더블린에서 수난 기간 중에 교회가 아닌 일반 극장에서 초연이 되었다.  

 

오라토리오는 오페라와 비슷하다고 볼 수 있다.

오페라처럼 주로 오케스트라, 합창단과 독창자들이 극중 인물로 등장해서 스토리를 전하는 점이 비슷하나

오페라는 무대에서 분장을 하고 의상을 입고 연기를 하는 데에 비해서

오라토리오는 무대에서 연주되는 노래 가사로만 스토리가 소개되는 점이 다르다고 하겠다.

 

메시아는 구원자를 뜻하며 또 히브리어로 기름 부음을 받은 자 (영어로는 Annointed) 라는 뜻도 가지고 있다.

크리스찬에게는 메시아가 곧 예수 그리스도이며, 이곡은 예수의 생애와 고난을 그린 곡으로

예수의 생애에 따라서 3부로 구성되어 있다.

제 1부는 예수님의 탄생에 관한 이야기를 이사야 서와 마태복음을 바탕으로 하고

제 2부는 수난과 부활, 승천 그리고 그리스도의 복음으로 이루어져 있다.

제 3부는 요한 묵시록에 있는 내용을 바탕으로 되어 있다.

따라서 1부는 성탄절 전에 많이 연주되고

2부와 3부는 부활절에 많이 공연된다. 

 

 

요즘이 대림절 기간이기에 우선 1부만 소개합니다. 

 

PART I

OVERTURE (서곡)

 

 

RECITATIVE. (Accompanied - Tenor)  (내 백성을 위로하라, 이사야 40:1-3)

Comfort ye, comfort ye My people, saith your God; speak ye comfortably to Jerusalem; and cry unto her,

that her warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity is pardoned.

The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness:-Prepare ye the way of the Lord:

make straight in the desert a highway for our God.

Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill made low,

the crooked straight and the rough places plain.

And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together;

The Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to His temple, even the messenger of the covenant,

for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee.

For Behold, darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people;

but the Lord shall rise upon thee, and His glory
shall be seen upon thee, and the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to

The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light; and they

For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given, and the government shall be upon His shoulder;

and His name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father,

There were shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.

RECITATIVE. (Accompanied - Soprano) (보라, 주의 천사가 그들에게 나타나서 주의 영광을, 루가 2:9)

And lo! the angel of the Lord cam upon them,

and the glory of the Lord shone round about them,

and they were sore afraid.

RECITATIVE. (Soprano) (천사가 말하기를 두려워 말라 나는 좋은 소식과 기쁨을 전하려고 왔다, 루가 2:10-12)
And the angel said unto them, Fear not; for behold I bring you good tidings of great joy,

which shall be to all people; for unto you is born this day in the City of David,

a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

RECITATIVE. (Accompanied - Soprano) (갑자기 천사와 만군이 주님을 찬양하며,  루가 2:13)

And suddenly there was with the angel a
multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying:-

thy King cometh unto thee! He is the righteous Saviour,

RECITATIVE. (Alto) (장님이 눈을 뜨고, 귀머거러기는 들을 것이며   이사야 35: 5-6)
Then shall the eyes of the blind be opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped;

then shall the lame man leap as a hart, and the tongue of the dumb shall sing.

Come unto Him, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and He will give you rest.
