헨델 작의 오라토리오 이집트의 이스라엘 (Israel in Egypt)

 About the Music

 

작곡가 헨델은(1685-1759) 1738년에 오라토리오 사울(Saul)의 작곡을 완성하자마자

사울에 이어서 오라토리오 이집트의 이스라엘을 작곡하기 시작해서 믿기 어렵게 약 3주만에 이 곡을 완성했다.

이 곡이 작곡된 정확한 배경은 알려지지 않지만, 아마도 메시야의 작사자인 Charles Jennens 씨와 함께

직접 구약성서의 탈출기와 시편 78장, 105장, 그리고 106장에서 인용된 구절을 바탕으로 이 오라토리오를 작곡했다.

 

대부분의 오라토리오 장르는 오페라처럼 배역이 주어져서 스토리를 전개하지만,

오페라와 다른 점은 배역을 맡은 성악가들이 연기나 분장을 하지 않고, 오로지 노래의 가사로

스토리를 전개하는 것이 보통인데, 이집트의 이스라엘은 헨델의 다른 오라토리오(사울, 삼슨)와 달리

독창자들에게 특정적으로 배역이 정해지지 않은 것이 특색이다.

 

이 작품의 원래 제목은 모세의 노래(The Song of Moses)였고 헨델은 캐롤라인 여왕의 장례식에서

첫 선을 보이려고 계획을 했지만, 그 계획은 이루어지지 않았다.

오라토리오는 서곡형식으로 헨텔의 concerto Grosso in F op3 No.4 의 첫 두악장으로 시작한다.

 

이집트의 이스라엘 오라토리오는 유대민족들이 이집트의 노예생활에서 해방되는 과정들을 그린 곡이다.

하지만 유대민족의 해방사건만이 아니라 이 곡은 시대를 막론하고

많이 힘들고 억압과 탄압을 받는 무리들이 고난과 역경을 딛고 홀로 우뚝 서 가는 과정을 표현해 준다.

 

이 오라토리오의 초연은 1739년 4월 4일에 영국의 런던에 위치한 King's Theatre(왕실극장)에서 열렸는데

관객들의 반응은 시원치 않았지만 서서히 헨델의 작품들의 인기가 올라 가면서

헨델의 제일 알려진 메시야 다음으로 현재까지 꾸준히 사랑받는 오라토리오로 자리매김을 했다.

 

1부에서는 유대민족이 이집트의 지배자들에게 고통과 억압을 받는 스토리로 시작한다.

그리고 하느님이 여러가지 재앙과 질병으로 고집스러운 이집트인들을 벌을 주신 후에서야

그들을 해방시켜 주는 이야기로 이어진다.

그리고 모세의 앞장 서서 해방된 유대민족을 이끌고 홍해 바다 사이를 가로 질러서

그들이 오랫동안 꿈꾸던 젖과 꿀이 흐르는 곳으로 이동을 하는 장면이 묘사된다.

 

2부(모세의 노래)에서는 기적처럼 이집트에서 억압과 고통에서 벗어난 유대민족들이

하느님께 감사와 찬미를 드리는 장면이 합창으로 묘사된다.

마지막 곡에서는 소프라노 독창자가 반주없이 아카펠라로 주님께 마지막 찬미를 노래한 후에

합창단원들의 목소리로 1부에서 나온 테마를 주제로 찬미와 감사의 노래를 부르면서 마지막을 장식한다.

 

 

PART THE FIRST

  1. Recitative (tenor) & Sinfonia

 Now there arose a new king over Egypt, which knew not Joseph; and he set over Israel taskmasters to afflict them with burthens, and they made them serve with rigour.

(Exodus 1: 8, 11, 13) 

(탈출 1:8,11,13 그런데 요셉을 알지 못하는 새 임금이 이집트에 군린하게 되었다;

그래서 이집트인들은 강제노동으로 그들 위에 부역 감독들을 세웠다.

그리하여 이집트인들은 이스아엘 자손들을 더욱 혹독하게 부렸다.

 

 

2. Alto Solo and Chorus

And the children of Israel sighed by reason of the bondage, and their cry came unto God. They oppressed them with burthens, and made them serve with rigour; and their cry came up unto God. (Exodus 2: 23; Exodus. 1: 13)

 

 (탈출기 2:23, 1:13 이스라엘 잔손들은 고여게 짓눌려 탄식하며 부르짖었다.

그러자 고역에 짓눌려 도움을 청하는 그들의 소리가 하느님께 올라갔다.

3. Recitative (tenor)

Then sent He Moses, His servant, and Aaron whom He had chosen; these shewed His signs among them, and wonders in the land of Ham. He turned their waters into blood.
(Psalm cv: 26, 27, 29) (시편 105:26,27,29   그분께서 당신의 종 모세와 몸소 뽑으신 아론을 보내시니 이들이 저들 가운데에서 그분의 표정들을, 함족의 땅에서 이적들을 일으켰다. 저들의 몰을 피로 바꾸시어 물고기들을 죽게 하셨다.

They loathed to drink of the river. He turned their waters into blood.
(Exodus 7: 18; Psalm cv: 29)  (탈출기 7:18, 시편 105:29  강에 있는 물고기들은 죽고 강은 악취를 풍겨, 이집트인들이 강에서 물을 퍼 마시지 못할 것이다.   저들의  물울 피로 바꾸시어  물고기들을 주게 하셨다.)

Their land brought forth frogs, yea, even in their king's chambers.

(Psalm cv: 30)

(시편 105:30 임금님들의 방에 이르기까지 저들의 땅이 개구리 떼로 들끓었다.)

He gave their cattle over to the pestilence; blotches and blains broke forth on man and beast.

(Exodus 9: 9, 10)

(탈출기 9:9,10  그리하여 그을음이 먼지가 되어서 이집트 온 땅에 퍼녀 나가, 사람들과 짐승에게 혹사병이 들게 하리라.

모세가 그을음을 공중으로 뿌리니, 사람과 짐승에게 궤양을 일으키는 종기가 되었다.)

He spake the word, and there came all manner of flies and lice in all quarters.
He spake; and the locusts came without number, and devoured the fruits of the ground.

Egypt was glad when they departed, for the fear of them fell  upon them. 그들이 떠나갈 때 이집트가 기뻐하였으니 그들에 대한 두려움이 저들을 엄습한 까닭이다.

He rebuked the Red Sea, and it was dried up. He led them through the deep as through a wilderness.

(시편 106:9 주님께서는 홍해 바다를 꾸짖어시어 물을 마르자 그들이 깊은 바다를 사막인 양 걸어가게 하셨다.)

 

But the waters overwhelmed their enemies, there was not one of them left.

And Israel saw that great work that the Lord did upon the Egyptians; and the people feared the Lord, and believed the Lord and His servant Moses.

Moses and the children of Israel sung this song unto the Lord, and spake, saying: I will sing unto the Lord, for He hath triumphed gloriously; the horse and his rider hath He thrown into the sea.
