[아름다운 영시47] Remember by Christina Rossetti 와 함께 합창곡 감상

 

2013년 6월 22일, 토요일 저녁에 RES 합창단의 올해 정기공연 마지막 공연이 있습니다.

이번 공연의 1부는 주로 바하와 멘델스존 작곡의 성가곡을,

그리고 2부엔 20세기의 캐나다와 미국의 현대작곡가들의 다양한 합창곡과

그리고 흑인영가와 캐나다 포크송들이 레파토리로 무대에 올려진다.

 

프로그램 2부에 연주되는 곡 중에 크리스티나 로제티의 소네트를 가사로

캐나다 밴쿠버 출신이자 현재 UBC 음대교수인 스티븐 체트만(Stephen Chatman]작곡의

Remember 를 함께 감상해 봅니다.

 

 

 

Remember

Remember me when I am gone away,

         Gone far away into the silent land;

         When you can no more hold me by the hand,

Nor I half turn to go yet turning stay.

Remember me when no more day by day

         You tell me of our future that you plann'd:

         Only remember me; you understand

It will be late to counsel then or pray.

Yet if you should forget me for a while

         And afterwards remember, do not grieve:

         For if the darkness and corruption leave

         A vestige of the thoughts that once I had,

Better by far you should forget and smile

영국시인 로제티는 1930년에 영국 런던에서

이탈리아 나폴리에서

정지적인 망명을 한 부모 사이에서

네 자녀 중에서 막내로 태어났다.

그녀는 평생 독실한 캐톨릭 신자인

엄마와 살면서 그녀의 작품에서 볼 수 있듯이

종교적인 영향을 깊숙히 끼쳤고, 

시인인  아버지와 시인이자 미술가인 오빠 단테

그리고 작가이자 평론가인 둘째 오빠 윌리엄처럼

예술적이고 문학적인 자질을 물려받은

그녀가 빅토리아 시대가 낳은 최고의 여류시인이

된 것은 우연은 아니다.

 

 십대 후반에 화가 제임스 콜린슨과 첫번째 약혼을 한 적이 있고,

1860년대 초반에 그녀는 찰스 케일리(Charles Cayley)와도 약혼을 하지만

독실한 성공회 교인인 그녀와 캐톨릭 신자인 콜린슨과 케일리와 종교적인 견해차이로 결국 파혼을 하고

1894년에 암으로 죽을 때까지 평생 독신으로 살았다.

 

이 시는 14줄로 구성된 소네트 형식으로 쓰여졌고,

 로제티와 케일리가 서로 사랑하던 시기인 1862년에 쓰여진 것으로 알려졌으며

다수의 영문학자들은 이 소네트가 그녀가 사망할 경우에 케일리를 위해서 쓰여졌다고 분석하고 있다.

로제티는 그녀 생전에 죽음에 관해서, 특히 그녀 자신의 죽음과 열정적인 사랑을 주제로

다수의 시를 쓴 시인으로 알려졌는데, 이 Remember 시 역시 첫 귀절부터 사랑과 죽음의 주제로 시작이 되고

이는 마치 삶에서 사랑과 죽음은 뗄래야 뗄수 없는 숙명같은 존재라는 것을 이 14절의 소네트 시 전체에 잘 드러난다.

from the American Academy of Arts and Letters,

and the 2001 BBC Masterprize short-list.

In 2012, Dr. Chatman was appointed

a Member of the Order of Canada.
