성지주일의 유래와 풍습 - Palm Sunday(종려주일) of 2014

4월 13일에 성지주일에 야자수 가지를 들고 갈멜산으로 올라가는 신자들

 

 

2014년 성지주일 혹은  팜 선데이(Palm Sunday) 가 내일  4월 13일 일요일에 돌아온다.

이 날은 예수님이 예루살렘 성 안으로 들어 오신 것을 기념하는 날이기도 하며,

성지주일은 부활절까지 1주일의 성주간(Holy Week)의 시작이기도 하다.

예수님이 예루살렘 입성하는 사건은 신약성경 4개의 복음서에서 다 기술을 하지만,

성지주일의 유래는 주로 요한복음서 내용을 따른다.

바하 작곡의 감동 넘치는 마태수난곡과 요한수난곡도 성주간 동안의 사건을

토대로 작곡된 바로크 합창음악의 진수를 보여주는 걸작품이다.

 

 

 

   성주간(Holy Week)은 부활절 전 일주일을 말하는데, 예수님의 생애 중에

   마지막 며칠동안에 일어난 사건들을 묵상하고 기리는 시기이다.

   성주간의 시작은 성지 주일(Palm Sunday) 로 시작하는데

   이는 예수님이 예루살렘 성 안으로 들어 오신 날이며,

   성 목요일은(Hole Thursday or Maundy Thursday) 은

   예수님과 제자들이 함께 최후의 만찬을 드신 날이고,

   성 금요일(Good Friday or Holy Friday)은 예수님이 체포되어서,

   십자가에 못박혀서 돌아가시고 묻히신 날이다.

   이 기간은 크리스찬들은 구세주이신 예수님의 죽음과 부활을 통해서

   구원의 신비를 묵상하는 시간이기도 하다.

 

   성지 일요일은 예수님께서 유다인의 큰 경축일인 과월절(Passover)날을 기념하기 위해서

   예루살렘으로 나귀를 타고 입성을 하실 때,

   수많은 군중들이 야자수(palm) 가지를 손에 들고 흔들거나 예수님이 오시는 길 위에

   그분을 환영 해 주었고, 그리고 그분의 뒤를 따라 성 안으로 들어간 데에서 유래하고 있다.

   군중들은 또한 "호산나!"라고 외치면서 그 분을 맞이했는데

   이 말은 "우리를 지금 구해 주소서"(Save us Now!)라는 뜻이다.

   성지주일을 기념하는 행사는 4세기 초부터  예수님이 예루살렘에 입성할 때처럼

   신도들이 palm 가지를 들고 함께모여서 Mount Ascention(강림 산) 에서 출발해서

   성십자가 교회(Holy Cross) 교회까지 행진을 하면서 시작이 되었고,

   차츰 이 행사가 전 유럽으로 퍼지나가기 시작했다.

   9세기부터는 이 행진을 예루살렘에서 거행하는 대신에

  각도시마다 위치한 교회에서 사제들이 축성을 마친 가지를 들고 교회를 나서서 행진을 한 다음에

   다시 교회로 돌아 와서 그 가지를 들고 선 채로 미사나 예배가 시작된다.

   그리고 미사 중에 복음 귀절을 그냥 일기 보다는 교회 신자 중에서 배역을 맡아서

   요한 복음이나 마태오 복음서에서 기술한대로  주님의 수난일기(Passion Play) 재현해서 듣는다.

 

   수난일기에 의하면 주님을 기쁘게 구세주라고 환영한 사람들이 불과 며칠 후에

   빌라도 총독에게 가서 앞장 서서 예수님을 십자가에 못박으라고 소리를 친 군중들처럼

   나약하고 어리석은 우리네 삶을 다시 돌아보기도 한다.

   이날 받은 성가지들은 일년 내내 집에 잘 보관 해 두었다가

   다음해 사순절의 시작인 재의 수요일에 태운 다음에 이마에 재를 바르는 예식에 다시 쓰인다.

 

   한국처럼 palm 가지가 흔하지 않은 나라에서는 palm 대신에

   pussy willows(버들 강아지), sallow or yew(버드나무)

   혹은 부활 백합이나 수선화가 쓰이기도 한다.

 

 

 

 

 

 

예수님의 이 예루살렘 입성은 이미 이 사건이 일어나기 450-500 년전에

예언자 즈가리야(Zecariah)가 구약 즈가리야 9장 9절에 이렇게 예언을 했다:

시온의 딸아, 한껏 기뻐하여라. 

예루살렘의 딸아, 환성을 울려라.

보라! 너의 임금님이 너에게 오신다.  

그분은 의로우시면 승리하시는 분이시다.

그분은 겸손하시어 나귀를, 어린 나귀를 타고 오신다.

 

한편 신약에서 마태오 복음 21장 7-9절에는  

그들은 그렇게 암나귀와 어린 나귀를 끌고 와서 그 위에 겉옷을 펴 놓았다.

예수님께서 그 위에 앉으시자, 수많은 군중들이 자기들의 겉옷을 길에 깔았다.

또 어떤 이들은 나뭇가지를 꺾어다가 길에 깔았다.

그리고 앞서 가는 군중과 뒤따라가는 군중이 외쳤다.

"다윗의 자손께 호산나!  주님의 이름으로 오시는 분은 복되시어라. 

지극히 높은 곳에 호산나!"

 

이렇게 구약의 예언대로 이루어졌음을 알려 준다.

 

구약의 예언자 다니엘은 다니엘서 9:25에

우리에게 메시야가 오심을 이렇게 예언을 하고 있다.

 그러니 너는 이것을 알고 이해해야 한다.

예루살렘을 복구하고 재건하라는 말씀이 내린 때부터

기름부음 받은 영도자가 나올 때까지 일곱 주간이 흐르리라.

또 예순두 주간이 흐르는 동안 예루살렘이 복구되고 재건되어

광장과 외호까지 갖추겠지만

그 기간은 어려운 때가 되리라.

 사순절이 시작한지 엊그제 같은데

맘 먹은대로 지난날을 반성과 회개를 통해서

좀 더 나은 사람이 되기 위한 노력이 올해도 턱없이 부족하기만 한데

부활절까지 달랑 1주만 남았다.

밀렸던 방학숙제를 개학 며칠 전에 한꺼번에 몰아서 벼락치기로 하듯이

며칠간만이라도 새로 거듭나기 위한 노력을 제대로 해 봐야겠다.
