공연 1부-Stabat Mater(Pulenc) and Three Russian Songs(Rachmaninov)

 

4월 8일 수요일 연습 중에...

 

 

4월 10일 금요일 그리고 4월 11일 토요일에

에드먼턴 심포니 오케스트라와 내가 멤버로 활동하는

RES 합창단 협연공연이 윈스피어 연주홀 무대에 올려졌다.

 

이 공연을 위해서 1월부터 매주 화요일에 열리는 정기연습을 통해서 준비를 해 왔는데

20세기에 작곡된 작품들이기에 이질감이 도는 화음이나 오케스트레이션이

바로크, 클래식, 그리고 로맨틱 시대에 작곡된 작품들과 사뭇 달라서

쉽게 다가가기 어려운 곡들이기도 하고, 빠른 템포로 어려운 러시아 가사도 소화하기 힘든 작품들이다.

 

개인적으로 토론토에서 10일간의 방문을 마치고 돌아와서 숨도 돌릴 새도 없이

바로 당일인 화요일부터 매일 이미 예정된 스케줄대로 공연을 위해서

3일에 걸쳐서 오케스트라와 독창자와 판토마임 그룹과 함께

강도높은 연습을 강행하다보니 감기몸살까지 얻게 되었다.

 

하지만 3개월간의 연습시간도 아깝기도 하고,

올 시즌의 마지막 정기공연인데다가, 연주된 세 작품 다 에드먼턴 공연 무대에서

초연되는 작품들이라서 무리를 감수하고

무대에 서고 싶은 마음에서 잠시의 피곤과 고통을 뒤로 하고 공연에 임했는데,

힘든만큼 아주 기억에 남고 감동적인 공연을 무사히 잘 마쳤다.

 

공연 1부에서는 프란시스 풀렝크의 Stabat Mater 와

라흐마니노프 작곡의 Three Russian Songs 가 연주되었고

2부에서는 벨라 바르토크 작의 The Miraculous Mandarin 이 판토마임과 함께 연주되었다.

 

 

4월 7일 화요일에

 

Stabat mater (1950)  by Francis Poulenc (1899 - 1963)

 

Stabat Mater (스타밭 마테르)는 라틴어 성가로, 십자가에 못박힌 예수님의 곁에서

슬퍼하는 성모님을 묘사한 내용으로 이루어졌다.

라틴어인 '스타바트 마테르' 의 뜻은 '서 계신 어머니' 라는 뜻이다.

 

이 성가의 내용은 신약성서 중 루카 복음 2장 35절에 기술한대로

예언자 시메온(Simeon)이 비수가 성모님의 가슴에 찌를 것이라는 예언에 근거를 두고 있다.

그리고 성가에 등장하는 가사(기도문)는 프란체코스코 수도회에서 십자가에 못박힌 예수님을 특히 공경하던

13세기에 쓰여졌으며, 저자를 이노첸테 교황 3세(1216 사망) 으로 추정되기도 하지만,

보편적으로 자코포네 다 토디(Jacopone da Todi 1230-1306)를 실제 저자로 받아들여지고 있다.

 

스타바트 마테르 성가는 예수님이 체포되어서 십자가에 못박히질 때까지의 상황을 그린

14차로 이루어진 십자가의 길과 깊은 연관이 있기도 하다.

1727년에는성모님의 일곱가지 슬픔을 기리는 대미사를 드리는 8월 15일 미사에 드리는

기도로 책정이 되었고, 현재까지도 사용되고 있다.

 

팔레스트리나, 페르골레지, 비발디, 스칼라티, 하이든, 드보르작,

베르디, 그리고 풀렝크 등 르네상스 시대부터 현재까지

이 라틴어 기도문을 사용해서 많은 작곡가들이 스타바트 마테르 작품을 작곡해서

세계 주대 공연 무대에 지속적으로 올려지기도 하고

부활절 일주전인 성주간과 혹은 장례미사에서 연주되는 작품이다.

 

 

 

 

2015년 4월 10일과 11일에 공연된 스타바트 마테르는

프랑스태생의 작곡가이자 피아니스트인 프란시스 풀렝크(Francis Poulenc)가

1950년에 작곡되었으며, 작곡을 하게 된 배경은

그의 친구인 크리스치앙 베라드의 죽음을 기리기 위해서

처음엔 레퀴엠 형식으로 작곡하려고 맘을 먹었다가

'검은 성모님' 의 유물이 간직된 로카마두르(Rocamadour)에 순례를 다녀 온 후에

스타바트 마테르 가사를 사용해서 추모곡으로 작곡되었다.

 

이 작품은 소프라노 솔로, 혼성합창단과 오케스트라 파트로 이루어졌으며

1951년에 프랑스 스트라스부르크 페스티발에서 초연이 되었다.

그리고 초연부터 이 곡은 유럽 전역에서 청중들로부터 큰 호응을 얻었으며

오케스트라의 다양한 편성과 음색으로 성모님의 슬픔과 고통 그리고 위안을

잘 그려진 덕분에 현재까지 무대에 자주 올려지는 작품이다.

 

풀렝크의 스타바트 마테르는 12부로 되어있으며, 총 연주 시간은

약 30분이 소요되어서 다른 작곡가들의 작품들보다 거의 반 정도밖에 걸리지 않는다.

Pro peccatis suae gentis Vidit Jesum in tormentis Et flagellis subditum.	For the sins of his people she saw Jesus in torment and subjected to the scourge.
6.  Vidit suum dulcem natum Morientem desolatum, Dum emisit spiritum.	She saw her own dear Son dying, abandoned, while He gave up the ghost.
7.  Eia Mater fons amoris, Me sentire vim doloris Fac ut tecum lugeam.	Come then, Mother, fount of love, make me feel the strength of your sorrow so that I may mourn with you.
8.  Fac ut ardeat cor meum, In amando Christum Deum Ut sibi complaceam.	Make my heart burn with love for Christ, my Lord, that I may be pleasing to Him.

Three Russian Songs, Op. 41by Segei Rachmaninoff

 

공연 1부에 공연된 두번째 작품은 러시아 작곡가 세르게이 라흐마니노프가 작곡한

세편의 러시아 노래 (op 41)으로 라흐마니노프가 합창단과 오케스트라르 위해서

작곡한 마지막 작품이기도 하다.

 

이 작품은 1927년에 미국 필라델피아에서 유명하고 전설적인 지휘자  레오폴드 스토코브스키의 지휘로

토론토가 자랑하는 최고의 합창단 멘델스존 합창단의 협연으로 초연이 되었다.

특이한 사실은 같은 무대에서 라흐마니노프의 마지막 피아노 협주곡도 초연이 되기도 했다
