Like a tree, he interprets light.
Papa Bois**, old woodsman, come see
how this golden son paints your domain—
sycamore’s plainsong, pine’s keen sigh,
aspen’s conspiring laughter—be
a witness to his legerdemain.

나무처럼 그는 빛을 제대로 해석한다.

숲의 아버지, 파파 보아**, 

양버즘 나무가 부르는  평범한 전례송, 소나무가 내뱉는 비탄의 한숨,

아스펜 나무들끼리 주고받는 비밀스러운 웃음이 있는 당신의 영역을

 

                                             When branches thrash outside your window
                                             you sometimes believe you’re the storm
                                             that moves them, displaced hurricane.
                                             You tell no one. That’s nothing new.
                                             The South taught you early to conform,
                                             to wear a mask that’s become urbane.

                                       
                        From star to star the mental optics rove.

푸른 소나무와 헐벗은 아스펜 나무가 공존하는 평화로운 울동네 숲

 

 

**Papa Bois: 파파 보아는 캐리비언 지역에서 오랫동안 전해져 내려 온

전설적인 캐릭터로 불어 방언으로 '숲의 아버지'라는 뜻을 지니고 있다.

그는 숲과 그 안에 사는 식물과 동물을 보호하는 수호신에 해당하며

몸의 반은 인간이고(머리, 가슴, 팔) 그리고 반은 염소의 모습을 하고 있다.

그는 다른 모습으로 변신해서 숲을 해하는 인간을 쫓아내기도 한다.

이 시를 쓴 카이저 씨는 할렘 르네상스 활동 멤버로 활동했던 흑인 화가

보포드 델레이니/Beauford Delaney (Knoxville, Dec. 30, 1901 – Paris, March 26, 1979)의 

삶과 그의 예술적 혼을 기리기 위해서 쓰인 연작 시 작품 중에 한 편의 소네트 작품이다.
