이 작품의 제목은 천상에서 왕관을 쓴 성모 마리아 대신에

바닥의 앉은 모습의 마리아는 그녀의 미덕인 겸손을 묘사하고 있다.

그리고 그녀는 거의 아기 예수를 안고 젖을 물리는 모습으로 그리고 있는데,

이런 아이콘의 모습은 1325-1350년 사이에 시작해서

고딕 후반기까지 이어졌다.

이 작은 패널은 Arte della Lana/모직 상인 조합이 의뢰해서 제작되었는데

그리스도 교회의 첫 순교자이자 이 협회의 수호성인인

 성 스테파노의 이미지가 이 패널에 묘사된 것으로 알 수 있다.

성 스테파노는 이 조합의 엠블럼인 '하느님의 어린양'이 그린

깃발을 들고 있다.

이 작품 속의 성 제롬은 흔히 추기경이 입는 복장처럼

붉은 망토와 챙이 넓은 모자를 쓰고 있는데,

실제로는 그가 추기경이었다는 기록은 없지만,

성 제롬의 아이콘은 14세기부터 아주 인기가 많았다.

 

작품 속의 인물들이 실제보다 기다랗게 묘사된 것은

사람들이 고딕양식 작품들을 선호하기 시작했다는 것을 보여준다.

 피렌체의 조합/Guilds 

14세기의 피렌체는 지방자치 도시로

소수의 부유한 가문들이 이끄는 과두정치체제의 정부였다.

그리고 아르티/Arti라고 불리는 무역이나 상인들의 조합의

멤버가 되어야, 정치적으로 활동을 할 수도 있었고

생업에도 제대로 충실할 수 있었다.

 

각 조합마다 그들만의 기념 조각상도 있고,

멤버들의 활동을 철저하게 규제하는 엄격한 룰이 있었다.

 

당시 피렌체에서는 21개의 조합/guilds가 있었는데,

그중 일곱 개는 아르티 마지오레/Arti Maggiori라고 불리는

규모가 큰 조합이 있었는데,

(판사와 공증인 조합, 의사와 약사, 모직 생산업자,

모직 의류 제작업자들과 상인들, 실크 조합, 금융업

그리고 모피 상인들)

이 조합의 멤버들은 권력과 이권이 많았다.

 

이들의 영향력과 중요성은 세월이 흐르면서 약해졌지만,

토스카나의 대공작, 피에트로 레오폴도가

이 1770년에 이 조합들을 없애고,

상공회의소가 이들의 이권들을 차지하기까지

400여 년간 존재했다.

역사적으로 아주 중요하며, 보기 드물고 아주 특별한 이 수예 작품은

피렌체의 산타 마리아 노벨라 성당의 메인 제대에 걸렸던 걸작품이다.

그는 피렌체가 낳은 최고의 화가 죠토의 작품을 고딕 양식으로

비단실, 은실과 금실로 수를 놓아서 만들었다.

이 작품은 피렌체에서 제작된 최고의 수준의 수예 작품으로 일컬어지며

1300년대에 부유한 가문들 사이에서 애지중지 아끼던 작품이기도 했다.

동정녀 마리아의 성수태는 중세부터 르네상스에 걸쳐서

크리스천 아이코노그라피 작품에  자주 등장하는 주제이다.

특히 피렌체에 소재한 Santissima Annunziata/성수태 대성당

제대에 걸린 성화는 기적을 이루는 것으로 믿을 뿐 아니라

18세기까지 3월 25일에 돌아오는 성수태 축일을

새해의 시작인 1월 1일로 정하기도 했다.

이 패널 작품은 브리타니의 성 이브가 가난한 이들, 고아들과

과부들에게 정의를 실천하고 있는 모습을 그렸다.

이브 성인은 화려하고 힘 있는 부유층은 무시하고

늘 가난한 자들의 권리를 위해서 평생을 바쳤다.

1366년에 성인으로 추대된 성 이브는 이 작품에서 판관의 복장을 하고

가장 힘없는 이들의 권리를 보호하는 인물로 묘사되었다.

작품 아래 프레델라에 묘사된 그리스도는

교실 배경에 드물게 교수의 의자에 앉아서 

아홉 명의 남성들을 가르치고 있다.

이 작품의 주제는 진실된 지식을 가르치는

교육하는 그리스도의 모습을 그리고자 했다.

교실에 놓인 한 책상의 스크롤에

화가의 이름인 "프란체스코"가 아주 작게 새겨져 있다.

이 신비한 사건의 징표를 남기기 위해서 그녀의 띠(거들)를 성 토마스에게 남긴다.

이 패널의 밝은 황금의 배경은 중세와 여전히 연결 고리로 이어지면서

프란젤리코의 섬세한 화풍의 영향을 많이 받았다.
