So Much Happiness/넘치는 행복

Naomi Shihab Nye (1952 –  )/나오미 쉬합 나이

 

It is difficult to know what to do with so much happiness.
With sadness there is something to rub against,
a wound to tend with lotion and cloth.
When the world falls in around you, you have pieces to pick up,
something to hold in your hands, like ticket stubs or change.
행복이 넘칠 만큼 충만할 때에 우리는 뭘 해야 할지 쉽게 떠오르지 않지요.

우리가 슬플 때는 무엇인가를 원망하거나,

상처가 나면 로션이나 천으로 대처라도 하지요.

온 세상이 당신 주위에 무너져내려도, 삶의 조각이라도 주울 수 있고,

남은 티켓 반 쪽이나 거스럼돈처럼 손에 무엇이라도 잡을 수 있지요.

But happiness floats.
It doesn’t need you to hold it down.
It doesn’t need anything.
Happiness lands on the roof of the next house, singing,
and disappears when it wants to.
You are happy either way.

 

Even the fact that you once lived in a peaceful tree house
and now live over a quarry of noise and dust
cannot make you unhappy.
Everything has a life of its own,
it too could wake up filled with possibilities
of coffee cake and ripe peaches,
and love even the floor which needs to be swept,
the soiled linens and scratched records . . .

 

Since there is no place large enough
to contain so much happiness,
you shrug, you raise your hands, and it flows out of you
into everything you touch. You are not responsible.
You take no credit, as the night sky takes no credit
for the moon, but continues to hold it, and share it,
and in that way, be known

요즘 날씨는 심술을 부리고,

지구촌 곳곳에선 여전히 서로 치고받고 싸우고,

물가는 뚜렷한 이유 없이 부지기로 치솟고,

선거를 앞두고 정치인들은 한 표를 얻기 위해서 혈안이 되어있고,

사회는 양심과 상식을 벗어나고 점점 개인주의에 빠져드는 

요즘,

가끔은 행복으로 그득한 하루를 보내고 싶은 소망이 생긴다.

그래서 오늘 이 시를 대여섯 번 음미하면서

지극히 주관적인 소소한 행복에 빠져봅니다.
