[영시/하이쿠36] 바쇼작의 개구리 그리고....

우리 집 뒤로 가면 좋은 산책로가 있다.

호수와 숲이 있어서 제법 운치도 있어서 아침 저녁으로 시간이 나면 한바퀴 죽 돌고 오곤 한다.

얼마 전에 자연보호 지역으로 개발이 되지 않은 숲을 따라서 편한 길이 조성이 되어서

도시의 주택가 내에 있는 산책로라고 믿기 어려울 정도로

나무도 울창하고, 새소리도 들리고, 아늑해서 산책길이 더 즐거워진다.

 

5월 초가 되면 겨우내 강남갔던 친구들이 넓은 창공을 가르면서

특유의 울음소리고 깍깍거리는 소리를 듣게 되면 지난 4년간 호수의 터를 잡은 친구 커플들이

다시 찾아오는지 궁금해서 이틀에 한번꼴로 호숫가를 서성이면서 기다리곤 한다.

 

 

 

 

며칠 전에 기다리던 Canada Geese 가족은 안 보이고,

호숫가에 있는 벤치에 앉아있으니 생각지도 않은 불청객인 개구리 한마리가

물 속으로 뛰어 드는 것이 보였다.

어렸을 때부터 조신하고 여성스런 구석은 잘 없고,

끊임없는 호기심으로, 늘 엉뚱한 짓을 잘 하던 내 별명 중 하나가

청개구리여서인지 내심 반갑기도 했다.

 

오래 전에 읽어 본 일본의 하이쿠의 대가인 바쇼 작의 개구리 하이쿠가 

머리에 떠 올라서 원어인 일어는 잘 모르지만

다양하게 영어로 번역된 하이쿠를 오랜만에 다시 감상 해 본다.

아주 간결하고 짧은 하이쿠 세 귀절을

이렇게 많은 번역가들이

다양하게 번역을 한 것을 보면

우리들은 같은 사물이나 상황을 보더라도

각 개인마다 아주 다양하게 주관적으로 받아들이고,

따라서 각자의 언어로 표현하는것을 새삼 깨닫게 된다.

 

그리고 같은 언어권이 아닌 글을 번역하는 작업은

단순히 언어를 직역하는 일만이 아니고,

씌여진 언어 나라의 문화, 풍습, 사회 전반을

이해하고, 오랜 경험을 통해서만이

적절하고 자연스런 번역이 나올 수 있다고 본다.

 

특히 함축된 언어로 쓰인 시를

자연스럽게 번역한다는 일은 더 어렵기도 하고

또 다른 장르의 창작작업이라고 생각한다.

 

 

 

나처럼 어려서 부모님을 따라 이민을 왔기에 삶의 대부분을 외국에서 오래 살아서

자연히 한글보다는 영어로 이해하고 표현하는 것이 훨씬 편한 사람들에겐

영어로 된 글을 한글로 번역하는 작업과

반대로 한글로 된 글을 영어로 번역하는 일 중에서

과연 어떤 작업이 더 어려울까라는 라는 생각을 블로깅 초창기부터 늘 따라다녔다.

 

물론 번역할 글에 따라서 답변도 달라질 수 있지만,

멀지 않은 미래에 내가 좋아하는 영미시, 에세이 장르의 글을

정확하면서도 자연스러운 언어로 번역을 하는 커리어 번신을 꿈꾸어 본다.

 

 

저녁을 먹고 9시가 넘어서 거실 창을 통해서 거위 가족이 보여서

반가운 나머지 얼른 카메라를 들고 나가서 거위가족을 만나 보았다.
