포레의 레퀴엠과 쟉 에튜의 심포니 #5(Symphony #5 by Hetu/Requiem by Faure)

2017년 2월 11일 금요일에, 2016년-17년 시즌 세번째 합창공연이

에드먼턴 심포니 오케스트라와

소프라노 앙드리안느 브리쏭 파큉(Andreanne Brisson Paquin)

바리톤 제프리 씨레트(Geoffrey Sirett)두명의 솔로리스트와 함께 무대에 올려 졌다.

퀘백주 몬트리올 출신 지휘자인 쟝 마리 자이투니(Jean Marie Zeitouni)의

바통으로 윈스피어 뮤직 센터 무대에 올려졌다.

2월 11일 아침 10시에 윈스피어 뮤직센터 무대에서 가진 드레스 리허설에서...

퀘백 출신의 지휘자 쟝 마리 자이투니씨(중간에 흰 셔츠 차림)이

오케스트라 멤버들과 연습 시작 전에 담소를 나누고 있다.

1부에 공연된 에튜의 심포니 5번은 약 45분 연주 길이의 작품으로

토론토 심포니 오케스트라가 작곡가 에튜씨에게 의뢰해서 작곡되었는데,

안타깝게도 초연 공연 3주 전에 에튜씨는 암으로 작고했다.

1악장은 Prologue(서막, Paris before World War II),

2악장은 The Invasion(침략, The War),

3악장은 The Occupation(점령, The German Occupation),

그리고 4악장은 The Liberty(해방, The Hope for Liberation)

이라는 제목이 붙여진 4악장으로 구성되어 있는데,

첫 3악장은 오케스트라의 연주로,

그리고 마지막 4악장은 약 27분 길이의 합창곡으로 작곡되었다.

합창곡의 가사는 1942년에 시인 폴 엘류아르(Paul Eluard)의 시가 사용되었다.

1 악장 서곡은 2차대전 발발 전의 파리를 묘사한 것으로

파리 거리에서 천진난만하게 뛰어노는 아이들,

그리고 축제를 앞둔 행진, 어수선함과 도시의 생동감을 풍기는 악장이다.

독일의 침략을 묘사하는 2악장은 불안과 동요 그리고 폭력의 무드를 드라마틱하게 그리고 있으며,

프랑스가 독일군에 항복한 후 파리를 장악할 당시를 묘사하는 3악장은

느린 템포의 장송곡 풍의 행진곡과 그리고 중간중간에 분노의 외침이 들린다.

마직막 악장인 4악장은 1942년에 영국 공군 비행기가 하늘에서

폴 엘류아르가 쓴 "Liberte"(해방)가 새겨진 수천장의 삐라를 뿌려졌는데,

그가 쓴 파워풀한 시는 폭력이나 강압에 의해서 뺏긴 자유를 되찾고자 하는

염원이 담겨 있어서 오랫동안 사랑받고 있다.

이 악장에서는 시에서 표현한 내용을 짧은 드라마틱한 장면으로 묘사되었고,

각 신의 끝부분은 J’écris ton nom (I write your name)으로 반복이 되는데,

살면서 소소하게 누리는 평범한 것들을 기억속에 다시 한번 되새기면서 각인시킨다.

그리고 마지막 부분에는 독일군에서 해방되어서 자유를 되찾은 파리 시민들이

Liberte를 가슴 벅차게 외치면서 심포니가 끝을 맺는다.

Hétu, Jacques (쟈끄 에뜌)

작곡가 쟈끄 에튜씨는 캐나다 퀘벡주 트로와-리비에르(Trois-Rivières)에서

1938년 8월 8일에 태어나서 2010년 2월 9일에 작고한 캐나다 현대음악의 거장이다.

그는 어려서부터 음악에 재능을 보였고, 어린나이인 15세에 오타와 대학에서

피아노, 화성이론, 그레고리안 찬트를 2년간 마르텔 신부이자 교수에게 사사했고,

이어서 몬트리올에 있는 퀘백 음악 콘서바토와에서 5년간 작곡공부를 계속했다.

아울러 그는 죠지 사바리아로부터 피아노를, 멜빈 버먼씨로부터 오보에를

그리고 탱글우드의 루카스 포스씨로부터 작곡공부를 했다.

에튜씨는 1961년에 파리로 건너가서, 2년간 에콜 노말의 앙리 듀티에유 선생님으로부터 작곡을

파리 콘서바토리의 올리비아 메씨앙으로부터는 음악 해석(Analysis)를 공부했다.

1961년에는 작곡가로서는 최초로 유럽음악상(Prix d'Europe)를 수상하기도 했다.

1963년에 캐나다 퀘백으로 다시 돌아온 그는 1977년까지

라발대학교에서 음대 교수로 재직하면서,

작고한 2000년까지 몬트리올 대학교와 몬트리올 퀘백대학에서 작곡을 지도했다.

그는 대학교에서 많은 제자를 길러내면서 왕성한 작품활동을 지속해서 약 70여 작품을 남겼는데

그 중 60 작품이 그의 재능과 스타일을 좋아한 제임스 캠플이나 로버트 실버맨 등 뮤지션들이나

토론토 실내합창단, 몬트리오 튜더 합창단, 토론토 심포니, 몬트리올 심포니 등 단체들이

직접 의뢰해서(commissioned work) 작곡한 것이 특이하다.

에튜의 작품은  "네오 클래식 형식에 네오 로맨틱 분위기에20세기의 테크닉과 뉘앙스" 가 배인

작품으로 스스로 평가한대로 고전을 바탕으로 한 20세기 현대음악의 거장으로 인정받고 있다.

그의 초기 작품은 벨라 바르톡과 힌드미스 그리고 20세기 초반에 활동한 프랑스 작곡가의 영향을 받았고,

후기 작품은 알반 베르크와 구스타브 말러의 멜로디 영향을 받기도 했다.

그는 그의 주옥같은 작품으로 굵직하고 권위있는 상을 다수 시상했는데,

예를 들면, 캐나다 음악협회에서 시상하는 마테이첵 상을 무려 일곱번이나 받았고,

캐나다의 그래미상에 해당한 쥬노상을 수상해서 20세기의 작곡가로 인정받았다.

2001년에는 캐나다의 각 분야에서 최고 인물들로 구성된 Royal Society of Canada에 가입했다.

에튜의 심포니 작품은 현대음악답게 다수의 타악기 주자들과

관악기 주자들이 요하는 작품이어서 평소보다 많은 아티스트들이 무대에 올랐다.

  2부에 공연된 가브리엘 포레의 레퀴엠  

레퀴엠이라는 단어는 쉼, 안식(rest)이라는 뜻의 라틴어 단어로

레퀴엠은 망자가 천상에서 영원한 안식을 위하는 기도문이다. 

지난 토요일에 공연된 레퀴엠 미사곡은 프랑스 출신 작곡가 가브리엘 포레가  

1887년에서 1890년에 작곡했다가 몇번의 수정작업 끝에 1900년에 완성한 작품이다.

오케스트라와 소프라노와 바리톤 솔로 혼성 4부 합창단을 위해서 쓰여 졌으며,

캐톨릭 교회에서 둘아가신 분을 위해서 집전되는 장례미사에 사용되는

라틴어 기도문위 짧은 버전의 7악장으로 포레가 작곡했다.

참고로 7악장 In Paradisum은 장례 미사중에 쓰이는 기도문이 아니라

장지에서 묻는 예식에서 쓰는 기도문이다.
